Chapter 550
Ellie’s POV
The dirt road up from the village had been paved since I was last here, wide enough now for the tour buses that went up to the ruins twice a day. The museum, once one small room hardly big enough for a group of five to stand in comfortably, had been expanded, with plans for a second floor already underway. The village had a host of new shops opening, gift shops, cafes, Lycan-themed restaurants.
I wasn’t sure if a tourist haven was exactly what my ancestors had in mind when they spoke about a new era, but it felt like something close to it.
“Wow.” Dominic leaned forward in the driver’s seat as we drove beneath the gates, which had been festooned with welcoming banners for our arrival. “Your dad really went all out.”
I smiled, reaching back to put Sylvia’s pacifier back in her mouth. She spat it back out immediately and giggled.” It’s our first time in Goldenveil in almost two years. What did you expect?”
The banners intensified as we made our way toward the Alpha House. Posters announcing next month’s very first Lycan Day festival were plastered across every lamppost and shop window.
The Lycan Day festival was Dominic’s idea. Throughout the first year of his campaign, he had continued to endorse the twin packs, and his first initiative was to create a new holiday; a day to celebrate Lycan culture, once a year, where Lycan foods, customs, and history would be practiced across the continent.
Most packs accepted the new holiday with excitement, even if to many it was just another excuse to have off of work. Some were still wary, some outright against the notion, but so far, it had gone well. Goldenveil had been officially recognized by the packs, and had expanded its borders over the past year, with plans to expand the village itself to allow for new pack members. Bastian was six months away from taking his place as Alpha. I hoped to be there for the ceremony.
Back home, the foundation for my new museum had just been poured. It wasn’t much yet, just the layout, but it made Edmund cry when it happened, and that meant the world to me.
I’d decided that once it was finished, I would teach healing there myself. It was a long-awaited decision; leave for another traveling healer assignment, or stay? Eventually, I decided on the best of both worlds. Teach classes on Lycan healing practices and medicines at the new museum, occasionally traveling to the other Lycan Heritage Museums that were starting to pop up across the continent.
My goal, one day, was to convince the healer’s council to institute official Lycan healing classes in the academies, but that was still a long way off. There were a lot of old wolves who didn’t want to go back to the ancient ways, and liked things the way they were.
The Alpha House was awash with activity when we arrived. Caterers bustled around, servants scurried to and fro, their arms full of linens. My father threw his arms around me, and so did Nico and Amelia, and all the others that I’d missed so dearly.
“Ellie, you’re positively glowing,” Amelia said, pulling back to look at me, gripping my shoulders.
“And you,” I said, looking at her belly. Slightly swollen. Just a few months in. She and Nico got married amongst the ruins one night without telling anyone. They just came home with rings on their fingers, and no one questioned it.

Amelia grinned. “And the little one,” she said, pinching Sylvia’s cheek. “She has your eyes.”
I smiled. “I think hers are much nicer than mine.”
