The Man Who Never Looked Away novel Chapter 392

...

Garnett Harper stood outside the door, watching the entire scene unfold like a family drama he had no part in.

Lavinia sat there, a genuine smile radiating from the depths of her eyes.

It was the kind of smile that only came from feeling completely safe and cherished.

He suddenly couldn't recall if she had ever smiled like that during their two years of marriage.

Whenever she was with him, even her happiness was cautious, as if she were terrified he would ruin the moment.

And he had ruined moments. He used to enjoy being contrarian, tossing cold water on her joy just to see her upset, only to coax her back later.

His phone buzzed in his pocket. The people inside the room paused, glancing out to see him standing there. The surprise and awkwardness on their faces were palpable.

Garnett dismissed the call and walked in, his voice perfectly modulated. "My stepmother is also a patient here. She checked in a couple of days ago. I had no idea you were here too, Mr. Joplin, or I would have visited sooner."

The older couple already knew about his divorce from Lavinia. They looked uncomfortable, but given their past connection, they didn't want to be outright hostile.

"Take a seat, Garnett," Mandy offered politely.

Latham asked, "What's wrong with Mrs. Harper? Is she alright?"

A flash of embarrassment crossed Garnett's face. "She's fine. Just here for some routine health management."

Lavinia kept her head down, focusing entirely on peeling the apple. She refused to look at him.

Since she filed the lawsuit, he had tried to contact her multiple times to discuss terms for dropping the case. But she was holding onto her anger.

There would be no negotiations. She was going to get justice in court and let the world see exactly what kind of man he was.

As she stared at her hands, a shadow suddenly fell over her. Startled, she looked up to see Charley smoothly taking a step closer to her side.

He rested a hand lightly on the back of her chair, his gaze locking directly onto Garnett. In an instant, his protective, commanding presence filled the entire room.

The two men stared at each other in silence for a long moment. Garnett's fingers unconsciously curled into fists.
