"Tara, how can you falsely accuse me like that?" Danny props himself up on one elbow, an amused glint in his eyes. "Take a good look at the bed. Who crossed the line?"
His words make Tara pause. She glances down at the mattress and realizes she completely bulldozed past their makeshift barrier. Not only that, but she practically shoved him to the very edge of the bed. One more inch, and he would have been sleeping on the floor.
She is undeniably the one who invaded his space. Realizing her hypocrisy, her face flushes a deeper, entirely embarrassed shade of crimson.
"Look at these bags under my eyes," Danny says, pointing at his face with an exaggerated sigh of grievance. "You squeezed me so hard I couldn't sleep a wink."
"I... I didn't do it on purpose," Tara mutters, suddenly feeling incredibly guilty. "I don't know why that happened."
Why did she do that? She is usually a very peaceful sleeper. It must be the strange environment and the unfamiliar bed. Lacking a better excuse, she latches onto that perfectly reasonable logic.
"You say it wasn't on purpose, but you nearly pushed me onto the floor. I'm exhausted, and you claim you don't know why it happened," Danny teases.
He is taking full advantage of the situation. He spent the entire night secretly thrilled to hold her, fully enjoying the agonizingly sweet torture of having her so close. Now, he plays the victim flawlessly.
"Well, you can catch up on sleep when we get back," Tara deflects rapidly, desperate to change the subject before he dwells on it any longer. "I'm going to call Bianca so we can group up and head out."
Did she really just argue with him looking like this? A horrifying thought strikes her—did she have morning breath when she yelled at him?
Panic sets in. She aggressively brushes her teeth, washes her face, and desperately attempts to tame her hair. Only when she looks clean, fresh, and perfectly put-together does she finally relax.
"Am I really stressing over my appearance right now?" she mutters to herself as she opens the bathroom door. She has always been fiercely confident and has never once felt anxious about how a man sees her.
What in the world is wrong with her today?
