If this crowd knew how fiercely devoted and completely whipped Danny is behind closed doors, their jaws would hit the floor. They would probably think a body snatcher had replaced the ruthless billionaire.
Tara loathes these kinds of fake, social-climbing events. She tries to shrink into the background, quietly attempting to slip away and reduce her presence.
Danny notices and frowns at the brown-nosers. "You don't even know who Miss Dennis is?" he scoffs. "If you don't recognize the most promising rising star in the industry, don't bother wasting my time." In his eyes, Tara is the absolute center of the universe. These old dinosaurs are trying to flatter him but are completely missing the mark.
Shooting the crowd an arrogant glare, Danny grabs Tara's hand. "Come on, Tara. Let's go somewhere else."
Tara gladly follows him away from the suffocating crowd. Once they are alone, she glances at him. "Isn't it a bit risky to be that arrogant in front of them? They're influential figures in the scientific community."
"What's wrong with it? I didn't punch anyone, I didn't cancel any contracts, and I didn't have security throw them out. How is that arrogant?" Danny asks, suddenly adopting a pitiful, hurt expression. If the crowd saw this puppy-dog look, they would never believe he is the terrifying head of the Calhoun empire.
A second later, his signature smirk returns. "If they dare to disrespect you by not knowing your name, I have to put them in their place. So, Tara, what do you think? Am I doing a good job? Am I bordering on perfect boyfriend material?"
She is fully aware that she is falling for him. She wouldn't mind taking their relationship to the next level, but she refuses to make it easy. Growing up without a mother's guidance, she relies on the hard-learned lessons of her best friends. Tricia always reminds her that a woman needs to guard her heart to be truly valued. And Lucinda's disastrous past is a constant warning: spoil a man, and his ego will inflate until he thinks the world revolves around him.
Tara completely agrees. Men need boundaries. But looking at Danny, she wonders if maybe there is an exception. A man who won't keep score, who won't use her affection against her, and who won't betray her trust.
"Alright, alright," Danny chuckles, interrupting her internal debate. "I'll work hard to earn your approval until you willingly give me your hand."
