Katie fully intends to act as her son's ultimate wingman. Otherwise, God knows how long it will take for this sweet girl to start to become family.
"Danny is busy," Catherine scoffs. "What bonding do you need to do now? You should have spent more time with him when he was a child."
She is visibly displeased with her daughter-in-law, still holding a grudge over Katie prioritizing her career and leaving her precious grandson behind after her eldest son passed away. Only after delivering her lecture does Catherine notice the person standing behind Danny. She squints, her brow furrowing deeply. "Tara Dennis? Why are you here?"
Tara had already anticipated that Catherine would be shocked by her presence, and she certainly does not disappoint.
"Is it strange for her to be here? She can visit whenever she likes," Danny interjects immediately, shielding Tara with absolute protectiveness. He refuses to let her face any hostility in his home.
"Exactly," Katie adds, equally defensive. "Tara is welcome here anytime. In fact, I am thrilled when she visits."
Nobody is going to mess with her future daughter-in-law on her watch.
Catherine's face darkens. She completely underestimated how fiercely Katie and Danny would defend the girl. She only asked a simple question, yet they are acting as if she committed a crime. If Tara actually joins the Calhoun family, it will be utter chaos.
Over the past couple of days, Bonnie and Julianna have been taking turns whispering exaggerated rumors about Tara into Catherine's ears, completely ruining her impression of the girl. Furthermore, she blames Tara for ruining the rare marriage alliance she tried to set up between Danny and the Sinclair family. Catherine suspects that Katie has been locked away in the research institute for too long, hopelessly out of touch with the real world, blinding her to this nasty girl's true colors.
At that moment, the butler approaches to announce that lunch is ready.
"Serve it immediately. Tara must be starving," Katie declares, effortlessly treating Tara like family. She links her arm affectionately through Tara's and leads her toward the dining room. Danny follows closely, his gaze entirely fixed on Tara.
Catherine watches them walk away, feeling utterly bewildered and furious. She is the highest-ranking elder in the family, yet they are all fawning over that girl! Unable to voice her complaints out loud, she swallows her anger and follows them to the dining table.
As she sits down, she stares at the spread. The table is covered in fried foods, high-calorie dishes, and bowls sprinkled with bright red chili. It is incredibly spicy.
