Just as Charles expects, Jovani subtly dodges his advance.
"Charles, I'm not an unreasonable woman. I just wanted to see you for a moment before letting you head home," she purrs, wrapping her arms around him and planting several affectionate kisses on his lips.
In the brief seconds they are pressed together, Jovani stealthily slips one of her exclusive earrings deep into his coat pocket.
"You're such a clingy kitten. Maybe I just won't go back tonight," Charles murmurs, playing along with the charade.
"Didn't you say you need to keep up appearances? Aren't you worried your wife will get suspicious?"
"Suspicious or not, one day won't make a difference." Charles makes a show of trying to scoop her into his arms.
Jovani stops him, putting on a flawless act of a playfully frustrated lover. "Then go back and lay your cards on the table. You promised you were going to give my daughter and me our proper status."
"I did, but now isn't the right time," Charles replies, falling back on his tired excuses. "Deanna and I are married. If I force a messy divorce right now, she'll take half my assets and half the company. I'd lose my absolute control over the board."
He sighs, stroking her hair. "Just wait a little longer. When the perfect opportunity arises for her to transfer everything to me or the kids, we'll separate. And if she transfers more shares to Jade, doesn't that benefit both of us?"
Hearing the exact same excuse for the hundredth time instantly kills any remaining affection Jovani has for him. If Charles wasn't still useful at the Dennis Group, and if he wasn't the only one who knew where 'that item' was hidden, she wouldn't waste another second entertaining him.
"While you were gone these past few days, I went to the main house. Eleanor and your sister ganged up on me again, accusing me of treating Tara terribly. It's infuriating!"
"You really should care more about Tara. We owe her," Charles replies heavily. "Ever since she came back, all our attention has been fully focused on Jade."
Deep down, Charles harbors immense guilt toward his biological daughter. But between the exhausting demands of his work and his desperate, ongoing mission to play along with Jovani's schemes, he simply cannot manage everything. And now, the fragile peace is fracturing. The truth is dangerously close to bubbling to the surface.
"How can you take their side?" Deanna cries, her voice cracking. "Who knows if that rebellious girl ran away on purpose? She refuses to even tell us what happened! Don't forget, if we hadn't brought Jade home to act as an emotional anchor, neither of us would have ever survived the grief!"
