Chapter 296: A TORMENTOR’S LAST BREATH

Finnegan

I caught Angel’s arm where she stood frozen near the dessert table, her eyes wide and fixed on her uncle, the madman who shared her blood.

I pushed her toward another guard nearby.

"Take her," I said, my voice cracking with terror. "Go! Get her out!"

The madman had brought a bomb.

"Dad!" Angel started, her voice breaking, her hand reaching for me.

"Go!" I roared, the sound tearing from my throat.

The guard scooped Angel up and ran, his boots pounding against marble as he carried her toward the exit, where the crowd was being let out.

Devin was already halfway down the stairs, eyes wild and darting, holding the device high above his head like a torch.

"Where are you going, brother?" he called out in a sing-song, mocking voice, dancing down the steps.

"Running away again? Always running, always hiding. Come celebrate with me, it’s our birthday,"

I waited until he reached the ground floor before rushing him. I covered the distance in three long strides and tackled him hard on the stairs, my shoulder driving into his ribs with every ounce of force I had.

The impact jarred us both, and I felt something crack. The pain was distant and unimportant; I had to get the bomb away from him before he committed another murder right in front of me.

We tumbled to the floor, limbs flailing violently, grappling, throwing punches. His gun clattered away, skidding across the floor and disappearing under a table.

Henry moved closer to help, but I yelled at him. "No, get everyone out! Please!"

I grabbed for the bomb, my fingers closing around the cold metal, trying to wrench it from his grip. But Devin held on desperately, his nails digging into my wrists, his knee driving up into my stomach.

"You took everything from me!" he screamed, spittle flying as his elbow crashed into my face. My cheekbone, my jaw throbbed with pain. White stars exploded behind my eyes, but I held on.

"Mother! The company," Devin continued.

"Everything! You stole it all! You were always the favorite! Always the chosen one!"

I pinned him down with my full weight, my body covering his, one hand locked around the bomb while the other pressed his wrist against the cold floor. My face was inches from his, close enough to smell the blood on him.

"You chose this, Devin!" I spat, wincing at how painful it was to even speak. "You killed innocent people! You tried to kill Abigail! You tried to kill your own niece! This is on you! Your choices! Your hatred! Not mine!"

He thrashed wildly beneath me, bucking like a trapped animal, his free hand clawing at my face, my neck. "If I can’t have it," he roared, "neither can you! None of you!"
