Chapter 298: YOU’RE FIRED

Finnegan

I stood in the same room where we’d once held the service for Devin’s first death, staring at all the pictures of him.

I remembered how my mother had sobbed like her world had ended, knowing full well that Devin was alive. I remembered how she had guilted me for being alive while my brother was dead and in so many ways I had had for dampen my spirits around her just because I understood that losing two important people in her life must have taken a toll on her.

But they had really treated me like a fool instead. The black urn containing his ashes sat on the altar.

Let the old Wolfe legacy end here, I thought, my fingers tightening around Abigail’s hand where she stood beside me. Let it turn to ash and scatter on the wind.

I was done. Devin had been the last chain tying me down, and now I could finally look ahead.

There was so much more to life than this. I wanted to explore it all with the woman standing next to me. I wanted mornings without fear, nights without heavy security systems.

I wanted days where the only battles were over what to have for dinner or which movie to watch. I wanted a life defined by love instead of just survival.

The funeral service was brief and sparse. Angel stood on my other side, her face pale but composed, her hand tucked in mine. I’d tried to get her to stay home, but she’d wanted to come.

When it ended, we filed out into the sunlight, and the press descended like vultures. My men immediately swarmed around us, holding them back.

"Mr. Wolfe! Mr. Wolfe! Is it true you held your brother as he died?"

"Will you be taking over your brother’s remaining assets?"

"Is it true the bomb was meant for you personally?"

We ignored them, pushing toward the car while my men held them off, and drove to a small restaurant near the beach, somewhere we could breathe without cameras shoved in our faces.

Annette drove Meemaw and Gramps to meet us there. But before we could order, River cleared her throat.

"I need to tell you all something," she said, setting down her menu. "I’ll be leaving for London soon. There are... things I need to wrap up. Work stuff."

Angel’s head snapped up, her eyes widening. "No. No, you can’t go. Not now."

"Angel," River started.

"No!" Angel’s voice filled with panic. "I don’t want you to leave. What if something happens to you too? What if you don’t come back?"

The fear in her voice made my chest ache. My daughter had lost too much. I glanced at Abigail. We had all lost too much.

River reached across the table, taking Angel’s hand. "Hey. Look at me. I still have two weeks before I go, okay? And I’ll be back shortly after that. This isn’t forever. I’m not disappearing. I’m just... handling some things."

"Everybody says that," Angel whispered, tears gathering in her eyes. "Everybody says they’ll be back. And then they’re not."

Abigail reached over, covering both their hands with hers. "Nothing is going to change," she said firmly. "River is coming back. We’re all staying right here. We’re not going anywhere, Angel. I promise."

Angel didn’t look convinced, but she nodded, wiping at her eyes with the back of her hand.

Before the food arrived, Annette stood up, slinging her bag over her shoulder, tapping rapidly on her phone.
