Without realizing it, Yulen found himself pulling up outside Nikita's new neighborhood.
Through the windshield, he saw Winona, Stefan, Nikita, and Greta standing by Stefan's car. Nikita was happily loading a canvas bag full of leftovers into the backseat, waving at the couple with genuine affection.
Greta's bright, cheerful voice carried perfectly through the cool night air.
"Bye, Winona! Bye, Stefan! See you soon!"
The words hit Yulen like a physical blow to the chest.
Winona had already brought Stefan home to meet her family. And worse, Nikita and Greta had clearly accepted him with open arms.
He had spent years buying expensive gifts for the Jowett family. He had funded them without a second thought. And yet, they had completely erased him from their lives the second Stefan showed up.
A sickening, toxic wave of jealousy crashed over Yulen. He slammed his fist into the steering wheel, his knuckles turning white.
He threw the car into drive and sped away, heading straight for an upscale lounge bar downtown.
Giselle happened to be sitting at the bar when he walked in. Spotting him, she grabbed her cocktail and slid onto the stool next to him.
"Yulen. Rough night?"
Over the past few months of working together, Yulen had slowly come to view Giselle as a trusted confidante. The alcohol loosening his tongue, he bitterly recounted what he had just witnessed outside Nikita's house.
Giselle hid a flicker of shock behind the rim of her glass. Stefan had actually gone to meet her family?
She quickly regained her composure. Meeting the parents didn't guarantee a ring. If Stefan was truly obsessed with Winona, why hadn't he paraded her around at his grandmother's massive ninetieth birthday gala? Clearly, he was keeping her a secret from high society for a reason.
She looked at Yulen, who was staring miserably into his whiskey, and offered him a sympathetic smile. "You're still completely in love with her, aren't you?"
Yulen didn't answer.
"You don't understand how women operate, Yulen," Giselle continued, her voice soft and conspiratorial. "A woman never, ever gets over her first true love. No matter who she dates after you, she will constantly be comparing them to you. Honestly? I bet she only brought him to her family's house to get under your skin. If you still want her, you shouldn't just give up."
Yulen looked up, a desperate spark igniting in his eyes. "You really think so?"
"Absolutely. Think about how deep your history is. Do you really think she just flipped a switch and forgot about you overnight? She's hurting, and she's trying to make you jealous. If you actually put in the effort to win her back, you could have her."
