I stared at the pregnancy test for what felt like an eternity.
Two lines.
They were still there.
I blinked several times, as though doing so might somehow change what I was seeing.
It didn’t.
Two lines.
My hand slowly moved to my stomach.
There was nothing to feel.
No movement.
No indication that anything had changed.
And yet, everything had changed.
I was pregnant.
The thought was so enormous that my mind struggled to hold it.
After all those years of disappointment, after every test I’d taken while I was married to Lucian, after every month I’d convinced myself that maybe the next one would be different…
It had finally happened.
I should have been running out of the bathroom. I should have been shouting for Lucian or crying into his arms.
Instead, I stood there completely frozen.
Because there was one thing I couldn’t ignore.
A home pregnancy test wasn’t enough. Not for me.
Not after everything I’d been through.
I needed confirmation this time. Real confirmation from a doctor.
I looked down at the test again.
My eyes burned.
I carefully placed it back inside its box and slipped it into my handbag.
Then I took several deep breaths before leaving the bathroom.
When I returned to the terrace, Lucian immediately looked up.
“There you are.”
I smiled. “Sorry.”
He studied my face.
“You were gone for a while.”
“I was feeling sick again.”
His expression immediately changed. “Are you sure you’re alright?”
“Yeah, it’s nothing serious.”
I sat beside him. “I’m just tired.”
His hand found mine. “You’ve been saying that a lot lately.”
I squeezed his fingers. “I’ve had a long week.”
He didn’t seem convinced, but he didn’t press further either.
The rest of the evening continued.
Lucian and I watched one of his favorite classics together in the living room.
But my mind kept returning to the little plastic stick hidden inside my handbag.
Every few minutes, I found myself looking down at my stomach.
There was a life inside me. A tiny life. Our baby.
The thought made my chest ache.
