I left the mansion before Lucian woke up.
I told myself it was because I had work to do— that wasn’t entirely a lie.
But the real reason was sitting inside my handbag.
The pregnancy test.
I had barely spoken during breakfast. I found myself brushing my fingers against the strap of my handbag every few minutes, as though I needed to reassure myself that it was still there.
I had spent years imagining what it would feel like to walk into a hospital and hear a doctor tell me I was pregnant.
Now that I was actually doing it, I found it terrifying.
What if the test had been wrong? I’ve heard of a few cases like that.
What if—
I forced myself to stop.
I was doing it again; creating disasters before they even happened.
So after breakfast with Lucian, I drove to the hospital.
Alone.
⸻
The waiting room was surprisingly quiet.
I sat there with my hands folded over my handbag, watching people come and go.
A tall woman walked past me holding a sleeping newborn.
I looked away.
Not because I was jealous— at least, not entirely.
It was simply too painful to look at sometimes.
A nurse eventually called my name, and I rose to my feet immediately.
Inside the consultation room, the doctor greeted me and asked me to sit.
“What brings you in today?” She asked.
I hesitated before pulling the pregnancy test from my handbag.
“I took this last night.” I stated.
She glanced at it. “Have you missed your period?”
“Three weeks.”
Her eyebrows lifted slightly. “And are you experiencing any symptoms?”
“My breasts have been tender. And I’ve been nauseous a few times— dizzy sometimes. And I’m also unusually tired.”
She nodded thoughtfully. “Those can all occur during early pregnancy. We’ll need to confirm it first of course.”
Those words made my heart race.
A nurse proceeded to take my blood and urine samples.
Then I waited.
The confirmation came faster than I expected.
The doctor smiled. “Congratulations.”
I stared at her. “It’s positive?”
“Yes.”
For a second, I couldn’t respond.
I had already seen the two lines. But hearing the words from someone else made them real.
“I’m pregnant.” I whispered to myself.
The doctor smiled again. “You are.”
I looked down at my hands, my eyes suddenly filling with tears.
I quickly blinked them away. “Sorry.”
“Don’t apologize.” She smiled warmly. “It’s a big moment.”
It was.
It was bigger than she could possibly know.
⸻
A short while later, I was lying on an examination bed. My heart was pounding so hard I could hear it in my ears.
The ultrasound machine stood beside me. A technician explained what she was about to do.
“I’m going to apply some gel to your abdomen,” she said. “It might feel a little cold.”
I nodded.
Then she lifted my shirt slightly.
The first touch of the gel made me flinch. It was cold— very cold.
I laughed nervously. “Sorry.”
“That’s normal.” She said with a smile before placing the probe against my lower abdomen.
I stared at the ceiling for a moment. God, I was as nervous as I was excited.
