The kids POV
But it wasn’t recognition.
It was confusion.
Her brows pulled together.
Her eyes moved slowly over his face as though she was searching for something.
Dave smiled nervously.
“Hey, Lydia.”
She didn’t answer.
Then her gaze moved.
To Ava.
Then Eli.
Nothing.
No smile.
No sudden excitement.
No,
My babies.
Nothing.
Just confusion.
Eli stepped forward.
“Hi, Mom.”
His voice was so excited that it almost cracked.
“Don’t you miss us?”
Lydia continued staring.
“I missed you so badly,” he continued, words spilling out of him now that he finally had the chance to speak to her. “I was so scared. We thought you were never going to wake up and Dad told us there was a chance that you might not wake up and I know he wasn’t supposed to say that but he did and I was really scared and Auntie Anna was there and she was crying too and Ava was trying not to cry but she was crying a little and—”
“Eli,” Ava whispered.
But he couldn’t stop.
“And we came here as fast as we could and Dad was walking really fast and then he carried both of us and it was embarrassing and—”
Lydia stared at him.
Her eyes looked lost.
Ava stepped closer.
“Mom…”
Her voice was softer.
“I’m so happy that you’re back.”
Lydia’s gaze moved toward her.
“When are you going to come home?”
Ava looked at the wires surrounding her.
“I hope it doesn’t hurt too much. All these machines and these wires…”
Dave was standing beside the bed now.
He looked at Lydia.
He was smiling.
But it was the kind of smile that looked like he was trying very hard to convince himself everything was normal.
“Lydia…”
She turned toward him.
“How did you know my name?”
The smile disappeared.
Dave stared at her.
For a second, nobody moved.
Then he gave a small, awkward laugh.
“Oh…”
He glanced toward the twins.
“I can leave if you want me to.”
Lydia frowned.
“I don’t know.”
She looked at him again.
“But I don’t remember you.”
Dave blinked.
“What?”
“I don’t remember you.”
His face changed.
Not completely.
Just enough for the children to notice.
Ava’s fingers tightened around Eli’s.
Dave looked toward the door.
Then back at Lydia.
“Well…”
He chuckled awkwardly.
“I’m Dave.”
Lydia stared at him.
“Dave?”
“Yeah.”
He nodded.
“Dave.”
He pointed toward the twins.
“As in the kids’ dad.”
Lydia’s eyebrows pulled together.
“The kids?”
Dave laughed again, but this time there was something nervous underneath it.
“Yeah.”
He looked at Ava and Eli.
“Your kids.”
Lydia stared at them.
Then back at him.
Dave rubbed the back of his neck.
“Okay, well…”
He tried to make the situation sound casual.
“Your kids are here. I can actually leave since you guys need some family bonding.”
He gestured vaguely around the room.
“I’m actually not supposed to be here because only one person can be here now, but there are three of us in this room, so…”
Nobody laughed.
Dave’s smile slowly disappeared.
Ava stared at her mother.
“Mom?”
Lydia looked at her.
“Don’t you recall Dad again?”
There was a long pause.
Lydia’s expression remained confused.
Then she shook her head.
“No.”
Ava’s heart sank.
“But Mom…”
She swallowed.
“Have I…”
She hesitated.
“Have I birthed kids?”
Dave’s eyebrows lifted.
Lydia looked at him, then back at the children.
“I thought the last thing I remember was me being in college.”
Ava didn’t understand.
“What does that mean?”
“It means…”
Lydia paused.
“I don’t remember having a man. A boyfriend. Or anybody for me to have birthed kids.”
Eli stared at her.
Ava stared too.
Lydia looked at both of them again.
“But you guys…”
She frowned.
“First of all, you guys are so cute and beautiful that I definitely don’t think I’m the one who birth you guys.”
Eli blinked.
“What?”
“And second,” she continued, looking genuinely confused, “you are probably six or five. How would I have kids of such age? Such big children.”
