David unfolded a tripod beside the table, adjusted its legs, and attached a camera. He checked the angle, glanced toward Luca, then toward Veronica, ensuring both would fit inside the frame.
"Of course, I should have known it was so simple. I’ll just kill him, shall I? Gee... why didn’t I think of that?" Veronica drawled. "What do you think I have been trying to do all this time?" She understood that he was trying to keep her calm, to remind her that she was not helpless.
David finished setting up the camera. He stepped back to inspect the frame, adjusted it slightly, then reached toward the table and picked up a knife.
The humour vanished from Luca’s eyes. David held Luca’s gaze, searching past the arrogance, the contempt, and the murderous patience. For the first time since Luca had entered the warehouse, David found what he had been waiting for.
Panic.
It appeared only briefly—a flash of raw terror when Luca’s eyes dropped to the blade and then moved toward Veronica—but it was enough.
David smiled. The great Luciano Genovese, feared across cities, finally looking like a man who understood that power meant nothing when the person he loved was beyond his reach. He turned and walked toward Vee.
"David?" Luca called. His voice remained controlled, but Veronica heard the strain beneath it. The slight roughness. The effort it took not to pull at his restraints until his wrists broke. "You don’t have to do this," Luca continued. "Your beef is with me, David." He leaned forward as far as the metal bar allowed, his entire body tense. "All you have to do is let her walk out of here, and you can do whatever you want with me."
"How sweet," Vee said, rolling her eyes. "Let her walk out of here like a fucking damsel in distress and let the men handle it?"
Luca turned his head sharply. "Vee."
"What?" she demanded. "You expect me to skip out while you stay here and let this lunatic carve you up for entertainment?"
"This is not the time."
"Oh, I’m sorry. Should I schedule my objection for later?"
David looked between them, momentarily robbed of the dramatic silence he had clearly planned. He had prepared everything, the least they could have done was respect the atmosphere.
"Will you fucking shut up?" Luca snapped. "I’m trying to keep the maniac from hurting you."
Veronica’s eyes narrowed. "And I’m trying to keep the maniac from killing you."
"I can handle myself."
"You are chained to a fucking wall."
"A temporary inconvenience."
"Oh, of course. My mistake. Very fashionable, those cuffs."
"Will you stop being a bitch for five seconds!"
Cuffs.
Get out of the cuffs.
While David’s attention had remained fixed on Luca, giving her the first useful distraction. She had positioned her thumb against the hard metal and pushed.
Pain shot through her hand, but the joint refused to move. Her thumb slipped from the edge, and the cuff rattled loudly.
It didn’t work. She needed another try, another distraction. Luca fixed David with a murderous glare.
The pain in his arm was vicious, but it did not matter. His plan was working. David’s attention was exactly where Luca needed it—on him, not on Veronica.
"I don’t know what she or my sister ever saw in you," David said, staring into his eyes. "But it doesn’t matter. I’m going to have you buried beside her."
"Your sister was a piece of trash," Luca said. "She is my one regret. My greatest mistake. Even in death, she still repulses me."
Across the room, Veronica caught the purpose behind Luca’s cruelty. He was feeding David exactly what he needed. Every insult bought her another second.
"Yeah, keep talking," Veronica snapped, forcing irritation into her voice while her bound hand shifted against the edge of the desk. "Get him even madder. Do you have any sense at all?"
