Chapter 518: Leave Him Alone

Luca turned his head toward her, fury arranged perfectly across his face. "Whose side exactly are you on, you bitch?"

David roared and drove the knife into Luca’s arm again. The blade struck close to the first wound.

Veronica screamed. "Luca!"

Luca’s body jerked against the bar, his chains rattling violently. He gave another rough grunt, refusing David the satisfaction of anything more. Blood spread down his sleeve, darkening the fabric before dripping steadily onto the concrete. His arm burned but his eyes moved past David and found Veronica.

She had repositioned her hand. Her thumb was braced against the metal edge.

Come on, Bambola.

David yanked the knife free, breathing hard with excitement. Luca barely registered the fresh rush of pain. He watched Veronica instead.

Tears were in her eyes, her shoulders trembled. Luca’s stomach twisted. For this, just for this, he was going to break David apart with his bare hands.

Veronica’s tears spilled over.

"The first time is always painful..." he whispered. "I’m sorry."

"Leave him alone," Vee begged. "Please... leave him alone."

Luca’s blood dripped onto the concrete. He kept his eyes on her. "Are you sure about this?"

"Yes." She forced the word through clenched teeth. "Yes, love. I am."

David looked between them. A moment ago, they had been tearing into each other. Now they were staring at one another with devotion. "What the fuck are you doing?" David asked.

Neither answered.

"Are you toying with me?" he demanded.

Vee swallowed the pain in her hand and smiled despite the tears in her eyes. "I thought you were smart. You’re just figuring it out?"

David’s expression hardened. "I know what you’re doing...You’re stalling. You think someone is coming to save you." He turned towards Vee, his voice turning poisonous. "No one is coming. I made sure of that. There is no version of this where you both get away."

Veronica’s pulse thundered. He was wrong. All she needed was one clean chance. David started towards her. Her skin was slick with sweat. She braced herself.

David stopped beside her. The bloodied knife hung loosely in his hand. Vee lifted her chin, her body screamed at her to recoil but he enjoyed fear too much. She would not feed him more than necessary. He reached behind her.

The blade caught the fabric at her back.

Fight.

"You piece of shit!" Veronica shouted. "I always wondered why you never got hard all those times we were alone." She turned her face enough to see him from the corner of her eye, contempt cutting through her tears. "I’m not the one you have the hots for!"

As she spoke, she tried as carefully as possible to free her wrist from the cuff.

"What are you talking about?" David demanded.

Veronica turned her head just enough to look at him, contempt cutting through the fear on her face. "It’s Luca you truly want, isn’t it?"

David chuckled. "I told you, stalling isn’t going to work. It only delays the inevitable." He dropped the knife on a nearby chair and reached for his belt. His fingers closed around the buckle and pulled.

The jingle of metal sent pure panic surging through her. David’s attention was divided between humiliating her and watching Luca suffer. He had become so drunk on control that he had stopped seeing Veronica as dangerous.

His trousers dropped. Veronica twisted her injured hand violently. The dislocated thumb folded against her palm, pain exploding through her wrist as she dragged it through the cuff.

Her hand slipped free. She did not stop to celebrate. Ignoring the agony burning through her hand, Veronica reached beneath the desk and caught the handle of the metal drawer. She pulled with every scrap of strength she had left.

David barely had time to lift his head. Veronica swung backwards. The metal drawer struck the side of his skull with a sickening crunch. The force ripped it from her grip and sent it spinning across the floor. He staggered, shock wiping the satisfaction from his face. His knees buckled as he doubled over, one hand flying to his head.

Veronica did not give him time to recover.
