The car screeched to a sudden, violent halt in front of the Bennett Residence.
Dylan threw the car door open and bolted straight toward the backyard. The heavy door that had been locked away for nearly five full years now stood wide open.
His frantic footsteps ground to an abrupt halt. He knew he had guessed correctly.
Elise was truly back.
He stared blankly at the dark, open doorway, his throat bobbing hard. As he lifted his feet to move forward, his legs felt as if they were cast in solid lead, so agonizingly heavy he could barely take a step.
Stepping into the small villa, every breath felt suffocatingly heavy.
His shoes creaked against the wooden staircase as he climbed toward the second floor, one slow step at a time.
When the open door of the studio came into view, a heavy, definitive weight plummeted into his chest.
The day had finally arrived.
He paused at the threshold, his breathing slowing down, turning dangerously low and raspy. Inside the room, Elise sat at the desk, her head bowed low.
Across the desk and scattered everywhere on the floor lay sheets of paper.
Dylan knew exactly what those documents were.
Taking a deep, shuddering breath, he stepped into the room.
"Elise."
Hearing that familiar voice, Elise slowly lifted her head. Their eyes met in the silent, motionless air. This reunion felt like a whole lifetime apart.
After a long pause, Dylan finally walked over and slowly sank to his knees in front of her.
Elise looked down at him quietly, her swollen, tear-stained eyes still glistening with fresh liquid.
Gazing up at her with his chin slightly raised, his throat worked repeatedly, desperate to utter something—yet he found himself completely stripped of words.
His hands, resting firmly on either side of her chair, clenched into tight, white-knuckled fists. If he could, he wanted nothing more in this world than to reach out and hold her hands right now.
The heavy silence and the intense gaze held between them stretched on indefinitely.
It lasted so long that it was Elise who ultimately broke it.
"Dylan... aside from all this, is there anything else?"
Dylan’s eyelashes fluttered faintly. His thin lips pressed into a rigid line as he gave a subtle, silent shake of his head.
Elise nodded. Taking a deep, shuddering breath, she raised her hand and wiped away the remaining tears on her face. "Alright. Then let it end here. Although the answer I sought came five years too late, for the sake of Robin being alive... I won’t hold hate against you anymore."
Dylan froze.
"But Robin’s custody must belong to me."
Dylan’s breath hitched instantly.
"And the new baby too." Elise looked straight into his dark eyes, her tone eerily calm. "You still owe me a child. Consider this baby as your way of granting me closure. Is that okay?"
Dylan stared at her, completely stunned.
In truth, he knew that the moment her memories returned, this final farewell—delayed by five long years—would inevitably have to be faced.
She could never truly forgive him after all.
These five years had been a stolen piece of time, secured only by his own desperate selfishness.
Now that her memories had flooded back, the Elise who once loved him with reckless, unconditional abandon was gone forever.
Love turned to hatred left no water to be gathered once spilled.
"Alright," Dylan responded in a low, gravelly voice. "I promise you. Both children will be yours."
Hearing his response, the final thread holding Elise’s tension together snapped completely. Her vision went black, and her body collapsed sideways.
"Elise!"
Dylan caught her limp, falling frame as his face paled instantly. Scooping her into his arms, he strode out of the villa at maximum speed.
. . .
At the Central Women and Children’s Hospital, the emergency doors swung open.
