"Genetics are undeniable," Josephine said, her tone laced with resentment. "There's a reason ancient families placed so much importance on bloodlines. Flawed traits bring destruction and disaster. Even though you basically raised her, it still couldn't erase the greed and ambition deep in her bones."
Elaine flushed under the scolding and let out a bitter laugh. "You're right. I completely misjudged her. She always seemed so warm and sunny, like an innocent girl without a shred of ambition. Who could have known what she was actually plotting?"
Finnian's face turned grim as he listened.
Over the past year or so, Noelle had constantly played weak around him. She knew perfectly well that he possessed a natural instinct to protect his family and a brotherly urge to care for her.
"Finnian, did you ever love her?" Elaine suddenly grabbed her son's arm, her voice urgent. "Don't tell me she had you completely fooled this past year. Did you honestly plan to divorce Kaia and end up with her?"
Finnian shook his head. "No, I never once considered getting a divorce. When she lost Rafael, she was so helpless and alone. And then... Grandmother said she was going to force her out of the country. I just felt sorry for her. Without Rafael there to protect her, she felt like this family didn't want her anymore."
"You idiot!" Josephine snapped. "I made my hints incredibly clear back then, but every single one of you... Ugh, never mind. I'll say it again: Kaia is my favorite granddaughter-in-law. Regardless of her capabilities or her beauty, she is entirely one of a kind. If you can manage to win her back, you have my absolute support. It just depends on what methods you plan to use."
After hearing this, a strange glimmer flashed through Finnian's dark eyes.
Elaine nodded in agreement. "Fine, I support you winning her back too. But under the current circumstances... why did you ever agree to sign those divorce papers?"
