Locking her up in this apartment showed exactly how untouchable he believed himself to be.
Sylvia got out of bed and walked barefoot to the floor-to-ceiling windows, pulling back the curtains. The night air felt as cold as water, and the skyline looked like an abyssal ocean, ready to swallow people whole.
The air conditioning was running high, sending tiny shivers across her skin.
Sitting in the back of his luxury car, Ashton hesitated for a moment before dialing Zelda. "What is she doing right now?"
Zelda checked twice before replying, "She's sitting barefoot on the windowsill, staring into space."
Ashton replied, "Find her some socks and make sure she puts them on. Keep an eye on her until I get back."
He looked out the car window. The flashing amber streetlights cast a dark, brooding shadow over his handsome reflection in the glass.
Rushing into the hospital, he found Ryan Winslet, who gave an exhausted nod. "She just woke up. The doctor says she can't take any more emotional stress."
Ashton nodded and went in to see her. Reina was pale, and the moment she saw Ashton, tears welled up in her eyes. "Ash..."
Ashton sat beside her, reaching out to check her forehead. "You're a grown woman now. Why are you still crying so easily?"
Reina forced a weak smile. "I just had a dream about my sister. She told me she was hurting because people were spreading vicious rumors about her. I don't mind Sylvia paying trolls to attack me, but the way she treated my sister... I just can't let it go."
Her eyes were glassy and fragile, her pale face looking incredibly pitiful.
Under the same fluorescent light, a dark shadow seemed to fall over Ashton's features, turning his gaze somber.
"I'll handle this. Just focus on resting. Don't overthink things."
As Ashton turned to leave, Reina softly grabbed his hand. "Ash, our engagement... it's still happening as planned, right?"
Her eyes were filled with frantic hope, as if waiting for a judge's verdict.
So Ashton said, "Of course."
When he stepped out of the room, he saw Ryan uncharacteristically smoking a cigarette. Ryan looked terrible, and he handed Ashton a manila envelope.
Ashton gripped Ryan's wrist, pulled his hand away, and tossed it aside. "What do I think she is? A sister."
His eyes carried a faint chill.
"As for Sylvia, I won't let her cross paths with Reina ever again."
Ryan was about to say that was impossible. Sylvia was an actress in the entertainment industry; she couldn't just vanish from the public eye. If Reina wanted to keep acting, there was no way they wouldn't run into each other.
But then Ryan suddenly realized what Ashton meant, staring at him in disbelief. "Are you out of your mind?"
Ashton had brought Sylvia to his apartment, and combined with the rumors Ryan had heard, it wasn't hard to connect the dots.
He was planning to lock her away.
From the few interactions Ryan had had with Sylvia, he knew she wasn't the type of girl to willingly give up her career.
"Did she agree to this? This is false imprisonment!"
