I had known Jason for too long to mistake certainty for reassurance. He could be stubborn when he wanted to be, and when it came to admitting that something was beyond his

“I don’t understand why you’re being so difficult about this,” I said quietly. “I’m not asking you to hand the responsibility over to me. I just want to understand what is happening to Silver

Jason’s expression softened slightly.

“I know.”

“Then tell me.” At this point, we were practically going back and forth.

He shook his head.

“Not now.”

I stared at him.

“Why?”

“Because there is no reason for you to carry this while you’re here.”

I almost interrupted him, but he continued before I could.

“You should relax and enjoy your stay. Spend time with your parents. You don’t need to

involve yourself in this.”

I folded my arms.

Jason looked at me for a moment. There was something almost tired in his expression.

“I don’t want you worrying about what is happening here anymore, Faye. As long as you’re here, I promise you’ll be safe. You’re under my protection.”

sighed. Did he really think I was expecting him to protect me? Jason was a good warrior, but not good enough that I would depend on him for protection.

“This isn’t about me worrying about myself,” I said. “My safety isn’t what I’m concerned about.”

Jason remained quiet.

“I’m concerned about Silver Hollow,” I continued. “I grew up here. These people are my family too. I may live somewhere else now, but that doesn’t mean I suddenly stopped caring about what happens to this pack.”

“I know that,” Jason said.

“Then you should understand why I want to know.”

Jason didn’t answer.

“Jason, you’re missing the point.”

“I don’t think I am,” he said. “You’re the one making things difficult.”

I shook my head.

Jason’s expression remained firm.

“What exactly are you afraid of?” I asked.
