Madeline:
"But it's complicated now because I think I've screwed everything up," she commented, using both hands to wipe the tears from her cheeks.
"How did you screw it up? I want to know everything," I asked.
With a sigh, she looked past me, craning her neck to see Daniel and Baxter.
They were standing together in the garden, talking. Daniel was holding a file and pointing at something, while Baxter simply stared at him with his hands clenched into fists.
Livia started telling me everything, the same things Baxter had already told me.
She even told me that she and Daniel had needed to fake an intimate moment to distract Sawyer's guards, and that when Sawyer attacked her, Daniel had risked his own life to save her.
"So where did it all go wrong?" I asked.
"Well, when we were pretending to be intimate, I kind of got scared."
She hesitated.
"Because I guess I enjoyed it a little too much," she confessed.
And it seemed like this was the first time she had admitted it out loud.
"So I got really awkward, and instead of admitting it, I decided to tell him that he wasn't even that special, and I fucked up." she bit her lip befire continuing.
"But you have to understand, Madeline. I was a gray wolf living in a world where wolves are forbidden. There was too much going on for me to accept my feelings and drag my best friend into this mess of a life. I needed someone powerful enough to protect me, and that's why I fucked up."
She covered her mouth with both hands before taking another deep breath.
"And then there was the whole fight between Sawyer and Baxter."
She paused, biting the inside of her cheek as if there was something else she wanted to say but was holding back.
I knew exactly which fight she was talking about. Baxter had told me all about it.
"The one where you told Daniel you didn't want his help, but you wanted Baxter's because you relied on him more?" I asked.
She sucked in a deep breath and looked at me.
"Because I honestly didn't know if even Baxter would be able to kill him."
As she spoke, my eyes widened in bewilderment.
"It's true. Back then, I didn't know he was your husband. I liked him, but when I saw Sawyer attacking us and Daniel running toward him, all I could think was, What an idiot."
She paused again, tucking her hair behind both ears.
"I didn't want Daniel to die, so I let Baxter try."
I didn't know why, but when she said that, instead of getting angry, I felt awful for her.
Baxter hadn't died. He had won.
But the truth was, she had chosen Baxter because she didn't want Daniel to die. Everyone had assumed she simply didn't care about Daniel or didn't trust him to fight Sawyer.
The truth was simpler: she didn't think Daniel could defeat the monster.
I mean, nobody could.
But she was willing to let Baxter try because she wasn't worried about losing him the way she was worried about losing Daniel.
That was why she hadn't wanted Daniel to fight. She loved him, and she couldn't bear to watch him die.
"Okay, but you need to go tell Daniel all of this," I said.
She shook her head.
