“I miss her! Couldn’t we have taken her with us? I can’t deal with this anymore. I need my Lilith with me.”
That was Claude’s irritating voice again, groaning dramatically as he slumped against the car window, eyes closed, blonde hair falling messily over his face. He looked half-dead, as though life itself had lost all meaning.
Yet—
My eyes remained fixed on the chessboard before me.
Cold. Dark. Unmoving.
I didn’t spare him a single glance.
For a moment, the car was filled with nothing but the dull clatter of wheels against stone and Claude’s endless moaning. The air was thick with tension, suffocating in its silence.
Then, without a word, I reached forward and picked up my knight, sliding it across the board and placing it before Silas’s bishop, taking his piece in one smooth move.
Across from me, Silas sat with one leg crossed over the other, head slightly tilted, his sharp eyes narrowed on the board. His face, as always, was expressionless.
Without even a flicker of hesitation, he lifted his queen and moved it with effortless precision, taking my rook as if it had never stood a chance.
My expression didn’t change in the slightest. I had already accepted it, I was going to lose.
Against Silas, I always knew how it ended. Anything that required logic, calculation, strategy, no one could surpass him, especially not in chess. It was why he handled most of the affairs of the pack. Why, I listened when he spoke.
And yet, I still played because I needed it. I needed the distraction, I needed something to keep my mind from wandering back to her.
To the blonde-haired girl with the blue ocean eyes and soft voice.
I wanted to ignore the strange emptiness gnawing at my chest, the ache that had settled into my bones. It had only been a few hours, and yet it already felt unbearable.
I was Lucien, cold and terrifying.
A man who wouldn’t hesitate to kill yet for her, I was nothing but a simp. A man hopelessly wrapped around a woman’s finger who missed a woman that I had barely been apart from for three hours.
Yet despite how badly I wanted to bury the thought—
“Oh, my Lilith.” Claude threw his head back again, clutching his chest as though he were dying. “I miss her. I want to hold her, I want to kiss her…” His voice dropped into a shameless murmur.
“I want to be inside her.”
The bastard beside me kept dragging my thoughts back to the very thing I was trying to escape. Honestly, I was seconds away from throwing him out of the window.
“I feel like I’ve been stabbed in the chest,” Claude continued miserably, pressing a hand dramatically over his heart. “Do you think it’s because of the mate bond? Is that why life feels so dull right now… so blank?”
He asked the question to no one in particular.
I didn’t answer.
Silas didn’t even look up from the board. His voice came out flat, emotionless, as though he were speaking to the air itself.
“You were obsessed long before finding out she is our mate.”
At that, Claude jerked upright, white robes shifting around him as he turned sharply toward Silas.
Silas moved another piece, his bishop, cornering my king further as Claude murmured under his breath, in thought.
“Ah, that is true”
Silas finally lifted his gaze, though it remained as cold and empty as ever.
“It is common,” he said. “I read about it in one book.” His fingers tapped lightly against the chessboard. “When someone is deeply attached to the person they love, separation can create a feeling of emptiness, restlessness, even physical discomfort.”
He paused.
“It is simply longing.”
Claude stared at him for a second then his face lit up.
“So I’m lovesick?”
Silas gave the smallest nod.
“Yes.”
Claude blinked again, then slowly turned his head toward me. A slow, wicked smile spread across his lips.
“Oh?”
His eyes gleamed.
“Then what does that make Lucien?”
The moment those words left his mouth, my grip on the chess piece froze. A sharp killing intent surged from me, thick and suffocating, aimed directly at him.
Claude didn’t even flinch.
If anything, the bastard looked amused and smiled even more.
A low chuckle rolled from his lips as he leaned back against the seat, utterly unfazed, and I was truly seconds away from throwing him straight through the window.
Then suddenly, the car came to an abrupt halt.
The entire vehicle jolted violently, sending the chessboard tipping sideways as pieces scattered across the floor with sharp clacks.
Yet none of us reacted.
My cold gaze merely lifted forward, the black knight still hanging between my fingers.
Silas didn’t even look up, his expression unchanged as his fingers began tapping slowly against the leather seat.
Claude tilted his head, the lazy smile dropping from his face almost instantly.
