The other two kids followed suit, lowering their heads to apologize.
Wen Dabao chimed in from the side, "Tsk, tsk. First time I’ve ever seen you guys admit defeat so meekly. It had to be Mom!"
She turned her head. "Mom, maybe you should forgive them?"
Bai Su smacked her on the back of the head. "Don’t you try to smooth this over!"
Wen Dabao stuck out her tongue, ducked to the side, and shot them a look that said, ’You’re on your own.’
Bai Su took a deep breath and looked at the three of them. "Heads up. Look at me."
The three kids pitifully raised their heads.
Bai Su watched them for a long moment before asking, "If you want to do something, as long as you come and talk to me, explain your reasoning... have I ever stopped you?"
The three kids shook their heads.
Bai Su continued, "Is your mother some fragile female who can’t protect herself?"
The three kids shook their heads again.
"If that’s not the case, then why didn’t you tell me?! If I hadn’t come to Qin City and found out, how much longer were you going to hide this from me?"
"If I knew, couldn’t I have watched over you every time you went on a mission?"
"If you had reported the mission location or target to me, couldn’t I have called for emergency help and had Lu Tingyan search for you if you were overdue?"
"If you had told me before each mission, couldn’t I have prepared some snacks and treats with strong Healing Power for you to carry, to save your lives in a critical moment?"
"Becoming Bounty Hunters is a huge secret to keep from your family! One day you’ll die somewhere and no one will even know! No one will be there to even collect your bodies!"
"And you’ll be satisfied then, will you? Watching from the great beyond as your mother goes insane, plastering missing posters everywhere and losing her mind looking for you?"
Sensing that Bai Su was truly enraged, the three kids dropped to their knees, one faster than the next. With practiced motions, they each grabbed their earlobes and bowed their heads. "Mom, we were wrong!"
Bai Su grabbed a thin branch from nearby and started swatting the three kids with it.
The three of them scattered, covering their heads and begging for mercy.
Once she’d finished teaching them a lesson, Bai Su reached into a dense patch of grass and pulled out a small figure.
Wen Dabao’s expression changed. "Little Treasure!"
"It’s Leia," Bai Su said.
Wen Dabao looked closer and saw that there were indeed subtle differences. Wen Xiaobao had long hair, always worn in little braids, and her features were softer, not as sharp as this person’s.
After a moment’s thought, Bai Su added, "She’s also your aunt."
The kids immediately crowded around, their curiosity piqued.
"Auntie? Why does she look so weird? Are her arms and legs broken?"
"The calluses on her hands are really deep. It looks like she handles guns a lot. Is her weapon a gun?"
Bai Su nodded. "Her superpower is likely Steelification."
She thought for a moment before adding, "When she wakes up, don’t say anything out of line. Follow my lead."
The kids nodded.
The drug’s effects wore off, and just as expected, Leia woke up.
The moment she opened her eyes, she saw several little kids surrounding her, including Bai Xiao Zhu, the one she had shot out of the sky with a cannon.
She shot up abruptly, the dislocated bones in her body cracking and grinding.
The kids all backed away warily.
Bai Su stepped forward. "You’re awake?"
Leia glanced around. "Where is this?"
"The forest outside the Abyss," Bai Su replied.
A look of disbelief crossed Leia’s face. "We made it out?"
"I carried you up," Bai Su said.
"You were sleeping so soundly I started to suspect you were faking it. I was tempted to just drop you a few times."
Leia froze, looking at this sister of hers with suspicion. "You climbed out of the Abyss and you’re completely unharmed?"
"I have a Healing Skill," Bai Su explained. "Otherwise, with all those wounds bleeding everywhere, we would have been devoured by wild beasts long ago."
"I ran into my children halfway up. They escorted us and helped us get here."
Bai Xiaolang nodded eagerly. "That canyon is really dangerous."
Bai Xiaoshe added, "That giant eagle almost pecked my head off."
"No!" Bai Su’s expression instantly darkened.
’A week is too long. Too many things can change.’
’Who knows what could happen in a week? What if Lu Tingyan... touches Qin Nuo?’
Bai Su looked at them. "I’m going to get Lu Tingyan back!"
"Even the Qin family can’t just blatantly steal another person’s Beast Husband."
Li Chenlin explained, "The Medical Alliance announced that you had fallen off a cliff and died. So when the Qin family came for him, the Snow Country had no reason to refuse..."
"But I’m standing right here, alive and well," Bai Su countered.
Wen Lan came down the stairs holding Wen Xiaobao. "It’s not that simple."
He looked like he had just woken up. In his arms, Wen Xiaobao’s eyes and nose were red from crying, looking utterly pitiful.
The moment she saw Bai Su, Wen Xiaobao scrambled out of his arms. "Mommy..."
Bai Su’s heart broke. She rushed over and took Wen Xiaobao into her arms. "What’s wrong, sweetie?"
Wen Lan felt a pang of jealousy. "She had a nightmare when you fell from the cliff. She woke up crying, and only Hua Hua was home with her. They both just ended up crying their eyes out..."
Bai Su’s heart ached even more.
She had thought at least her three big brothers would be home with her, along with Yelias and Wen Lan...
Who would have known that they had all run off to Qin City?
’If I had known Wen Xiaobao would be left all alone at home, I would have just brought her with me.’
After calming Wen Xiaobao down, Bai Su turned back to Wen Lan. "What did you mean when you said it’s not that simple?"
Wen Lan said, "Although the Qin family was the one to take him, according to the latest intelligence from the International Alliance, someone photographed Lu Tingyan entering the Medical Alliance’s base at 7:40 this morning."
At these words, the expressions on both Li Chenlin and Yelias’s faces turned grim.
If that was the case, things were even more troublesome.
They would have preferred it if Qin Nuo had simply taken a liking to Lu Tingyan. That way, once his memory returned, everything would be easily resolved.
But if the Qin family had used Qin Nuo as a pretext to send him to the Medical Alliance... by now, Lu Tingyan could very well be a corpse, dismembered on a dissection table.
