The wound clearly wasn't new; it had been there for days.
When did he get hurt? Was it during a mission? Why didn't she know anything about it?
Sienna crouched there, staring at the gash, her mind spinning in chaos.
But a second later, the distinct pattern of the burn made her freeze.
The shape of the injury... It was undeniably from the custom stun batons used by the security at Sterling Manor.
She had a similar scar on her leg, though not as severe, inflicted by his grandmother's bodyguards. She recognized the mark instantly.
But how did he end up struck by a stun baton? Who at the estate would dare lay a hand on him?
He was his grandmother's favorite grandson, the golden child of the Sterlings. Who would dare touch him? His grandmother?
But why?
A sudden memory flashed through Sienna's mind.
The day the bodyguards dragged her back to the estate, the furious older woman had been ready to strike her down until Jarred appeared just in time to intervene and send her away.
Come to think of it, no one from the estate had caused her any trouble since that night.
Could it be that his grandmother, unable to punish her, had taken her rage out on Jarred instead?
The moment the thought surfaced, Sienna dismissed it.
Jarred's heart and soul belonged entirely to Celeste. He had never truly looked twice at her, so why would he willingly take a punishment on her behalf?
She would rather believe the family had listened to his slander and feared she would extort them for money than believe he had sacrificed even an ounce of himself for her.
Sienna looked down at his pale face and fever-chapped lips, the brief flicker of warmth in her chest turning ice-cold.
She picked up her clothes from the ground, turned around, and walked out of the secluded cave.
Dawn had barely broken, and the mountain path was treacherous.
She navigated carefully, straining her ears for any sound, terrified the thugs from last night might reappear.
Yet, Jarred's haggard face remained stubbornly etched in her mind.
