Madeline answered the phone.
"Hello, is this Miss Monroe? This is Central City Hospital. Your grandmother Margaret Monroe's condition suddenly deteriorated today. We tried to resuscitate her, but she is now in her final moments.
She desperately wants to see you and your husband one last time. Could you both rush over immediately? Otherwise, you might not make it in time."
"What?" Madeline scrambled up, unable to process the horrific news. "This isn't real! It can't be."
The doctor on the other end felt terrible, knowing how hard this was to hear, but continued, "Miss Monroe! Everything I said is true. Please hurry and bring your husband. If you wait any longer... it will really be too late."
No matter how much she wanted to deny it, Madeline had to face reality. She burst into tears, crying out, "My grandma is dying. I'm going to lose my grandma."
Her grandmother was her only living relative, the woman who had raised her and the person she loved most in the world.
Madeline needed to leave immediately. She couldn't stop the tears from pouring down her face, but she remembered the doctor saying her grandmother wanted to see both her and Lucius one last time.
Her voice cracking, Madeline grabbed Lucius's hand. "Can you please come with me to see my grandma one last time?"
Ever since the miscarriage, her grandmother had known there was a deep fracture between Madeline and her husband. When Madeline first got married, she was so radiant, and all her grandmother wanted was for her to be happy, so she joyfully gave her blessing.
When Madeline got pregnant, her grandmother kept sending over farm-fresh chicken soup to nourish her, but all of it was destroyed by Liliana.
When she couldn't conceive again, her grandmother was heartbroken for her, constantly worrying that a divorce would leave Madeline completely alone, hoping she'd somehow get pregnant again.
Madeline wanted Lucius to come with her so that her grandmother could pass away without worrying about her broken marriage.
Lucius stared at her, utterly silent.
The next second, the man simply pulled his hand away.
