Madeline heard the underlying implication. He wasn't asking out of concern for her exhaustion; he meant that once she washed up, they could naturally move on to having sex. Or even if she didn't shower, he wouldn't mind—he knew she would have showered before getting on her flight anyway. His strong arm reached around her waist, preparing to effortlessly hoist her up with one arm.
Madeline twisted out of his grip. "Stay away from me."
Lucius felt her rejection, his thin lips pressing together. "Maddy, are you still angry? Liliana just got back from overseas and doesn't have a place to stay. She's just staying here for a while. I never expected you to be this petty."
"Doesn't have a place to stay?" Madeline scoffed, finding it absurd. "Are all the hotels in the city fully booked? Or is she a three-year-old child who doesn't know how to rent an apartment?"
Lucius frowned. "Liliana wants to stay here because it helps her recover. She has depression, and having a child around makes her feel better. Maddy, just stop being so petty. She'll move out in a bit; it won't affect you."
Madeline retorted, "Fine, but if you want to get laid, go find Liliana. Am I generous enough now? Letting my own husband go plunge another drain."
Lucius's expression instantly darkened, clearly shocked that Madeline would spit out such vulgar words. But then, he rationalized it.
After all, Madeline came from a working-class background, exposed to crude language growing up, completely lacking the refined elegance of a wealthy heiress like Liliana.
Lucius suppressed his anger, assuming she was just lashing out in the heat of the moment. They had been married for years, and he was comfortable with Madeline. Furthermore, ever since that incident five years ago... Lucius had developed some performance issues and hadn't slept with Liliana since.
He still desired Madeline, so he coaxed her gently, "Just once..."
He leaned in to kiss her as he spoke.
Madeline dodged him immediately.
