Lucius couldn't understand why Madeline was suddenly extorting him. In his eyes, her treatment was merely being delayed by a couple of days.

She was demanding almost all of his liquid assets. Aside from his future stakes in the Whitman Group, she knew exactly how much he had, and she wanted everything.

It would essentially leave him wiped out.

He felt he was just borrowing the doctor and wouldn't severely impact her recovery, yet she was using this to hold a knife to his throat.

"Don't you think you're being too ruthless?" Lucius demanded. "I already promised you that once her treatment is over, I'll never see her again. I'm treating this as a one-time repayment for the life she saved. What more do you want? Why do you have to push me into a corner?"

Madeline nodded, a bitter smile on her lips. "I'm not the ruthless one. Look at your own actions. You're the one ripping away my only lifeline. How many times have you and Liliana hurt me? I'm in this bed entirely because of you two. If you won't agree to my terms, then let the doctor proceed with my spinal surgery as scheduled."

Lucius finally realized Madeline had no intention of letting the doctor go. No matter what he said, she wouldn't give her permission. But Liliana's critical condition couldn't wait. Since Madeline adamantly refused, he simply wouldn't ask for her permission anymore.

"Maddy, you backed me into this corner," Lucius said grimly. "I'm sorry."

With that, he turned on his heel and walked out.

There would be no more negotiating.

A heavy sense of dread instantly washed over Madeline.

Just then, her phone buzzed. She picked it up.

It was a message from Sheri. It contained an audio recording of Sheri and Lucius talking. Sheri's voice echoed: *"Lucius, since Madeline is paralyzed, just don't treat her. If she recovers, she'll just use her inheritance to control you again. She thinks she can hook a billionaire once she divorces you. Leave her paralyzed, and she'll behave. You can go wherever you want with Liliana, and she won't dare divorce you. You've got your inheritance secured; all she can do is watch helplessly."* And Lucius's voice responded: *"Yeah."*
