Back in the bedroom, Madeline slumped onto the sofa. She reflected on the eight years she had poured into Lucius, and the four years she had sacrificed for Leo.
It had all been one pathetic, unrequited delusion.
She couldn't keep living like this.
Since she was definitively leaving Lucius, there was zero reason to stay at his company.
She was going to resign from the Whitman Group. It was the necessary first step to free herself up for the Aerospace Research Institute or any other rival tech firm.
Her mind made up, Madeline headed straight out the door to the Whitman Group headquarters.
The Whitman Group was the reigning corporate titan of the city, operating out of a towering skyscraper in the central business district. The gaming division, where Madeline worked, was located on the 32nd floor. She stepped into the elevator and pressed the button.
Swiping her access badge to enter, she immediately noticed the stares. Today was supposed to be her day off.
While a few colleagues looked genuinely surprised to see her, the majority cast heavily loaded, almost mocking glances her way. It made Madeline deeply uncomfortable.
She usually buried herself in the technical engineering side of things and rarely engaged in office politics.
Brushing off the strange vibe, she sat at her desk and typed up her letter of resignation.
But she was the Chief Engineer. For an executive of her rank to resign, corporate policy dictated that she had to go up to the top floor and secure the CEO's direct approval before HR could process anything.
Madeline printed the document, took the elevator up to the executive suite, and handed it directly to Lucius's personal secretary, Gavin Graves.
Gavin glanced at the paper. A resignation letter.
He was visibly shocked. He was the only person in the entire company who knew Madeline and Lucius were legally married.
