Only Sabrina knew the phantom agony lingering beneath her skin.
The bizarre medicine had healed her superficial wounds in hours, but it couldn't erase the agonizing, bone-deep pain.
It was pure torture.
She didn't bother explaining the medicine. She just grabbed Bella. "Bella, can you hire two highly skilled bodyguards for me?"
Bella stood up, alarmed. "Mom, what's wrong? What happened?"
"It's all for the sake of these shares! I went to Halfridge Villas to apologize to that madwoman. Turns out she is completely unhinged—she just attacked me.
"And then that little slut Lillian somehow found out how I treated her mother at St. Jude's Psychiatric Center.
"They tortured me. I nearly died!
"If they hadn't been afraid of Lillian going to jail and ruining the Mercer family's chances of bouncing back, they would have killed me."
Bella immediately stepped closer to inspect her mother's injuries.
"Don't bother," Sabrina said. "They injected me with some terrifying medicine. My wounds vanished.
"That's why I look so pale. That's the reason.
"That little slut Lillian has access to things we can't even fathom.
"Bella, find me some reliable bodyguards. I'm terrified to go back there."
Bella was stunned.
"Mom, are you out of your mind? After all that, you're still going back to apologize? Do you want to die?"
"I have to endure this, or I'll be kicked out with nothing.
"I bet half my life on Martin. If I give up now, I lose everything.
"I'm doing this for myself.
"I must get what's rightfully mine."
Bella hesitated. "But the risk is too high."
Sabrina sneered. "Risk? It can't get any worse than today.
"You think Lillian would actually kill me?
