"There's no grand trap. Just rolling with the punches,"
Lillian replied calmly. "They're all scheming against each other. I refuse to be kept in the dark and used as a scapegoat like I was three years ago."
Lillian was far from naive. By getting ahead of this bloody conspiracy, she ensured she wouldn't accidentally step on a landmine.
Her enemies were entirely devoid of morals. They would cross any line, always putting their selfish greed above basic human decency or familial bonds.
The only reason they were flocking to her now was because her newfound power offered them a massive payoff.
It was that exact greed that forced them to humiliate themselves in front of her daily.
Leonard understood perfectly. Her calculated foresight was a defense mechanism to prevent history from repeating itself.
She had built a fortress against them, but there was always the risk they’d manufacture a crisis and pin the blame on her.
"Don't worry," Leonard said softly, his voice a steady anchor. "The past stays in the past. No matter what happens, I'm standing right beside you."
Lillian smiled, a genuine warmth lighting up her eyes.
Breakfast was served out in the garden, as usual. Lillian had absolutely no intention of letting that toxic family set foot inside the main house of Halfridge Villas.
Her permission for Sebastian to bring Noah over had genuinely surprised him. It made him believe that, deep down, Lillian still possessed a mother's unconditional love.
Despite the boy's horrific outburst yesterday, she was still willing to see him. To Sebastian, it proved her feelings were real.
Sebastian had barely slept. Between coordinating with the Mercer family this morning and Noah's traumatized reaction to the mutilation he witnessed last night, Sebastian was overwhelmed.
Fearing more chaotic fallout, he had readily agreed to let the Mercer family take Noah for a few days.
The Mercers, desperate to fast-track the bond between Noah and Lillian, practically demanded Sebastian bring the boy to Halfridge Villas first thing in the morning.
Sebastian hadn't expected Lillian to agree to the visit.
