Family on Their Knees Heart Turned to Ice novel Chapter 1351

"If we pull this off, there's a massive bonus. If we crash and burn, we're dead men."

"Booze ruins operations. Pace yourselves."

Hearing the warning, Lucas tactfully stopped aggressively pouring shots.

After polishing off the meal, one of the enforcers stood up to deliver a stale tray of food to Debbie.

Seeing the guy sway slightly from the alcohol, Lucas immediately swooped in to take the job.

"Hey, take a breather, man. Let me handle it. I've got a history with her anyway. Perfect time to see if she has any last words."

"Who knows, maybe seeing my face will make her desperate. If she promises me a secret stash of cash to break her out, we split it three ways. Deal?"

The guard laughed, pointing a finger at him. "You sneaky bastard. You really had her wrapped around your finger. She used to throw chips at you like they were candy."

"Fine. But if she offers you a bribe, don't try to pocket it."

"Whatever she's hiding is pennies compared to your million-dollar commission. Don't do anything stupid."

"Just a theory," Lucas replied smoothly. "If she actually had real money left, she wouldn't be locked in a cage missing her fingers, right?"

Having masterfully disarmed any lingering suspicion, Lucas took the cheap styrofoam container and headed down the corridor to Debbie's cell.

Lucas was a master manipulator. Without his silver tongue, he never would have gotten within fifty feet of her.

The moment he stepped into the holding room, the stench of damp concrete hit him. The setup was brutal.

A single steel cot, a tiny table, and not even a chair. Debbie lay motionless on the bed. If Lucas hadn't been explicitly told she was alive, the sight of her mangled, bandaged stump would have made him assume she was a corpse.

He dropped the food container on the table and stepped up to the cot, roughly shaking her shoulder.
