Lillian casually set down her silverware and took a sip of milk.
Martin Mercer's head snapped up. Seeing Lillian's piercing focus on Sabrina, he didn't know what had transpired, but he knew one thing: absolutely no one was allowed to antagonize Lillian right now.
He felt they were so close to winning her back. If they just kept up this kneeling apology routine for another week or so, she might finally return to the Mercer Group and save them from bankruptcy.
This was the absolute worst time for any slip-ups.
Martin glared at Sabrina with intense scrutiny, mentally calculating if his wife had secretly orchestrated some new catastrophe behind his back.
Sabrina felt as though she were facing a firing squad. The combined, heavy glares of Lillian and Martin made her chest tighten with panic.
The most frustrating part was that she hadn't done a single thing recently!
What was Lillian playing at? Was she trying to frame her?
Right on cue, Martin barked, "Sabrina, what the hell did you do?"
Cold sweat broke out on Sabrina's back. She felt wildly wronged. "I... I didn't do anything!
"Lillian, you must be misunderstanding something.
"If there's a misunderstanding, just say it! I can explain!
"I—"
Seeing Sabrina's genuine, frantic confusion, Lillian deduced that Bella hadn't clued her mother in on the recent criminal exploits.
If that was the case, Lillian certainly wasn't going to be the one to break the news.
"Don't be so tense," Lillian said breezily. "I was just testing the waters. After all, you two are notorious for stirring up drama. With everything that's been happening lately, who's to say it wasn't the handiwork of you and your daughter?
"Tsk, tsk... it was quite vicious and ruthless, I must say."
The comment sent a fresh wave of cold sweat down Sabrina's spine.
Meanwhile, a lightbulb went off in Martin's head.
