Chapter 109
That hit Mrs. Young like a stab to the heart. The way Winter said it so calmly made it clear. She truly meant it. She really was determined to leave him.
Back at the station, Winter sat at her desk. She meant to work on her script, but she couldn’t settle down.
Maybe it was because of that dream. She kept thinking about her parents, and the year they died.
When she was seven, her family went bankrupt. Her father used the house at Westbury as collateral, and they moved into a cramped, run–down apartment. They sold off anything valuable they had left.
Winter didn’t care how small the place was. As long as her parents were with her, she felt safe and happy.
But that life didn’t even last six months. Her parents died.
Maybe the shock had been too much. She couldn’t remember many of the details from those days. She only remembered that morning, and how everything ended in an instant.
The police and the medical examiner ruled it a suicide.
Winter had never really believed it. Her parents loved her. She couldn’t understand how they could leave her behind with nothing but a note.
When she got older, she had someone help her pull the official records and the autopsy report. There were no red flags. Everything said the same thing.
So why was there a blurry teenage figure in her dream?
Winter rubbed her temples, her head throbbing. Maybe it was just stress. The divorce, the constant fighting, all of it had been grinding her down.
Back then, the three of them lived quietly in that old building. No one visited them. There was no “boy” in her memory. No one like that had ever existed in her life.
She took a sip of water and patted her cheeks, forcing herself to focus.
Then she remembered she had planned to meet her self–defense coach tonight. But after what Chris did to her in the car last night, her body still felt sore. The back seat was cramped, and she had been twisted into uncomfortable positions. Today, even walking made her ache.
There was no way she could train like this.
She opened her messaging app and tapped a chat that had no saved name, only a solid black profile picture. She typed:
“Coach, sorry. I’m not feeling great today. Can we move training to tomorrow night?”
She had barely put her phone down when he replied with a single word.

Chapter 100
She would deal with it head–on. Zac was a decent man so she knew he wouldn’t make things difficult for her.
After she replied to Zac, she hurried to finish her script, sent a quick message to Sam, and headed to the hospital.
Her car was parked in the garage. As soon as she stepped out, she saw Zac walking toward her.
“Winnie.” Zac was wearing a white coat. He walked up with his usual calm, reached out to close her car door for her, and said gently, “I’ll go with you.”
