Game Over, Mr. CEO: Your Wife Is Done (Winter and Chris) novel Chapter 110

Outside the ENT exam room, Winter stopped and said to Zac, “I can go in on my own. You should get back to work.”

Before last night, every time she called him “Zac,” it made him feel like they were still the same as they had always been.

But after what happened, he suddenly felt a new kind of pull between them. Something that had stretched across three years. Something he didn’t want to miss again.

He stayed where he was, smiled, and nodded. “Okay.”

Winter went into the exam room. She followed the doctor’s instructions and lay on her side on the exam table, waiting for the scope.

Even though she had been through the exam once before, her nerves still tightened when she saw the doctor walk over holding a thin scope only a few millimeters wide. The moment she pictured it sliding into her ear canal, her scalp prickled.

“Hold still.”

A warm hand gently supported the back of her head, and a calm voice said, “It won’t hurt.”

Winter froze.

In the reflection of the dark monitor, she caught Zac’s silhouette.

He had taken off his white coat. In that moment, he didn’t feel like her doctor.

Sensing how tense she was, the hand under her head shifted slightly in reassurance. Then Zac turned to

the tech. “You can start.”

“Yes, Dr. Davis.”

Not wanting to slow them down, Winter didn’t say anything. She closed her eyes.

With her eyes shut, everything felt sharper. The moment the scope entered her ear, she gripped the paper sheet under her hand and frowned, her lashes trembling.

At that moment, the exam room door eased open, careful and quiet, like whoever was outside didn’t want

to interrupt.

A hand closed around the doorknob. When the person saw what was happening inside, his fingers

tightened until the knuckles paled.

From the doorway, Zac’s tall frame blocked most of the view. His head was bent slightly over the exam

Zac glanced at Winter, her eyes still closed, and said into the phone, “Okay. I’m coming right now.

When the scope finally came out, Winter let out a quiet breath. She sat up quickly, and pain shot through her lower back. She sucked in a breath, annoyed with herself.

A hand steadied her at the waist.

A cool, clean scent drifted over, like damp forest air at dawn.

It smelled a lot like the wooden box from that morning.

Winter went stiff. She pretended she didn’t notice.

Without looking up, she bent to put her shoes on and asked, “Doctor, how does it look?”

“The tear is almost fully healed,” the tech said. “You won’t need medication after this. How’s your hearing been lately? Are you still getting ringing often?”
