Ever since Chris left those words behind on Sunday night, Skyla hadn’t seen him for three days.
That evening, she had wanted to ask him to dinner, but Chris had replied that he didn’t have time.
She sat in the dining room in a daze, waiting for him, not taking a single bite of dinner.
Late that night, the caregiver was pushing her upstairs when Skyla suddenly passed out just outside the elevator and collapsed to the floor.
By the time she got to the hospital, she had already woken up, though her mind was still not fully clear, and the doctor sent her straight into a room.
The hospital room smelled like disinfectant. When the needle slid into the vein at the crook of her arm, her eyes moved slightly. She turned her head and looked at the blood flowing into the tube.
She frowned and asked softly, “Why are you drawing blood?”
“Mr. Xander ordered it,” the nurse answered patiently. “He wanted to check whether your anemia has improved.”
So it was Chris’s idea.
The corners of Skyla’s lips lifted slightly.
Chris still cared about her.
That night, she had only played a small trick by messaging Winter. As a man, it was only natural that Chris would be upset after Winter questioned him like that to his face. Of course he would feel humiliated.
Now that three days had passed and his anger had faded, as long as something happened to her, he still cared about her the way he always had.
“Where is he?” Skyla turned her head and looked around.
The nurse pulled out the needle, pressed a cotton ball to the spot, and said, “Mr. Xander is outside.”
After the nurse left, someone walked into the room.
Skyla’s vision was still a little unfocused. Seeing the tall figure of a man, she tried to suppress the sudden burst of joy in her chest and softly asked, “What are you doing here so late?”
But once her sight cleared, she saw that it was Gavin.
Chris and Gavin did have somewhat similar builds, and they were about the same height. That was why she had mistaken him just now.
The difference was that Gavin had been a mercenary and had fought his way through life–and–death situations, so his build was sturdier than Chris’s. With her vision still blurred, she had assumed it was

“Ms. Jasper, Mr. Gavin is right. You should lie back and rest. Mr. Xander will be here soon.”
Skyla clenched her fingers tightly, her eyes drifting again and again toward the door.
In the doctor’s office, Skyla’s blood test results came back quickly, and the doctor pulled up the report on the computer.
“Mr. Xander, Ms. Jasper’s anemia has improved compared to before, but it still hasn’t reached a normal
level. Her numbers are still low.”
Chris glanced at the values on the report and understood immediately.
His fingers tapped lightly against the arm of the sofa. “Didn’t you prescribe iron supplements for her?”
The doctor sounded puzzled too. “In theory, a month should have been enough. Even if her absorption is poor, her levels should still have improved by now. They shouldn’t still be like this.”
On the night Skyla returned to the country, Chris had already brought her to the hospital for a full checkup. At that time, her anemia had been worse than it was now.
