On Saturday morning, Winter got up early. After buying breakfast for her coworkers, she drove to the Xander family hospital.

Things had been so chaotic in the ER the day before that she had accidentally left her press badge with her coworkers. She had an interview assignment on Monday morning and needed it.

After parking, she headed to the room where her coworkers had been staying.

But when she got there, the room was completely empty.

She was just about to call them when she noticed the message they had sent her half an hour earlier.

“We forgot to tell you. They moved us to the VIP wing.”

Three minutes later, Winter knocked and pushed open the door to the suite. Both bedroom doors inside

were open.

Her two male coworkers were staying in separate rooms, one on the left and one on the right.

They had both injured their hands, but not badly enough that they couldn’t feed themselves. Still, the nurses were being so attentive that they insisted on feeding them anyway.

The two grown men were so embarrassed they barely knew where to look. They had just awkwardly refused a few times when they spotted Winter and both shouted at once, “Winter, help!”

With the breakfast in hand, Winter stopped between the two rooms. “They can eat on their own. Don’t spoil them.”

“Mr. Gavin told us to,” one of the nurses said. “He told us to make sure they were both well taken care of.”

Gavin?

Winter slipped off her scarf and draped it over her arm. “You’ve already done plenty. Go take care of your other patients. I’ll talk to him.”

The way she said it made it sound like she knew Gavin pretty well.

The two young nurses immediately crowded around her, practically glowing with excitement. “You know Mr. Gavin? Do you have his number? We’ve asked him so many times, but he never gives it to us. He’s so cold, but in a really cool way. We heard he doesn’t even listen to Ms. Jasper.”

That sounded about right.

Gavin really was cold and intimidating.

Just like Chris, at least when it came to everyone else.

The two of them together could freeze the whole room.

The low, cool voice made both nurses tense up at once. Neither of them dared look up.

Chris said evenly, “Go back inside. Don’t come out until that reporter leaves.”

Inside the room, Winter’s two coworkers visibly relaxed after the nurses left.

But to their surprise, the nurses came right back in a moment later. At first, both men thought the nurses were about to fuss over them again.

Instead, they busied themselves around the room, straightening things up and writing notes on the chart
