They gradually relaxed.

“You’ve got to admit, the Xander family’s hospital is really something.”

“Yeah. I’m still kind of shocked they put us in a room this nice.”

One of her coworkers took a bite of the breakfast Winter had brought and said, “The Xanders have always been generous. Remember that time we went with Winter to cover the charity auction at Windham Gardens, and we stopped Mr. Xander halfway through?”

“Oh, right.” The other coworker slapped his hand against the bed. “You saying that just reminded me. I almost forgot to tell Winter.”

He turned to her and said, “You have no idea how huge the bonus Mr. Gavin gave us that night. It was basically the size of my year-end bonus. Actually, you probably got one too, right?”

Winter turned to pour them some water and gave a flat little “Mm.”

She hadn’t gotten a bonus. Instead, she had been offered a sapphire brooch worth over a hundred million at auction, and she had turned it down.

She didn’t say yes or no, so her coworkers assumed she had gotten one too.

“Mr. Xander may look like the kind of guy who keeps everyone at arm’s length, but he’s actually pretty good to people like us. Just for putting us in a room this nice, I’m officially a fan of his now.”

Winter set the water glass on the nightstand.

Putting everything else aside, Xander Corporation really did run a tight ship. Even Steve, who had always been difficult and impossible to manage, had fallen in line after joining the company.

Still, Winter had never once heard that Chris mistreated his employees. Whatever else might be true

about him, he was undeniably good at running a company.

She still needed to stop by the Xander estate to see Mrs. Xander Sr. She had already told Roy what her day looked like, and they were supposed to meet that afternoon for shooting practice.

So once both of her coworkers had finished eating, she got ready to leave.

“Where’s my press badge?”

“Mr. Gavin didn’t give it to you?”

Winter looked at her coworker in confusion.

He explained, “After you left the other night, Mr. Gavin came by to check on us. He saw your press badge there and said he’d bring it to you. You’d only been gone a little while when he left too, so I just assumed he’d already given it to you.”

“I can’t,” Gavin said, expression unchanged.
