“The family doctor already came by,” Mr. White said. “She’s just low on energy and doesn’t have much of an appetite. Nothing serious.”

Winter didn’t see it that way.

Last year, when she was in the later months of her pregnancy, she had felt the same way. She had no strength. Everything felt heavy. She had no appetite. At the time, she thought the baby was simply pressing against her stomach.

Less than two weeks later, the baby’s heart stopped.

The doctors never found a clear reason, but the memory left a scar she couldn’t erase. Ever since then, symptoms like this made her uneasy.

So when she saw Mrs. Xander Sr., she couldn’t relax.

Mrs. Xander Sr. was reclining on a chaise lounge in her bedroom, a blanket draped over her legs. Reading glasses rested on her nose as she flipped through a photo album.

The moment she saw the look on Winter’s face, she took off her glasses and shot Mr. White a reproachful glance. “Why did you tell her?”

Mr. White lowered his head.

“Don’t blame Mr. White. He’s just worried about you,” Winter said gently as she sat on a low stool beside

the chaise and studied Mrs. Xander Sr.’s complexion.

“Grandma, let’s go to the hospital for a comprehensive check–up, okay?”

Mrs. Xander Sr. sighed and reached out to touch her cheek. “It’s nothing. When you get to my age, you feel tired sometimes. Don’t make a fuss.”

Winter’s chest tightened. Compared to the last time she had visited, Mrs. Xander Sr. had lost noticeable weight in such a short time.

“Not even if I go with you? Please, Grandma. Just for me. Let’s get it checked,” she coaxed, slipping into a soft, almost childish tone.

Mrs. Xander Sr. deftly changed the subject. “Enough about that. Come look at these old photos with me.”

She slid her glasses back on and continued flipping through the album. She happened to be looking at a photograph of Chris’s parents.

He had inherited the best features from both of them. It was said that after he was born, they had decided not to have any more children so they could pour all their love into him.

Before the age of seven, Chris had been the happiest child in the Xander family.

Until the plane crash.

That night, Winter stayed at the Xander estate. No matter what, she insisted that the next day they would go to the hospital for a full examination.

Winter supported her as they walked toward the entrance. The glass doors slid open on both sides.

The moment Winter lifted her eyes, her steps froze. A numb chill spread through her chest.

Not far away, Chris was striding quickly toward the elevator.

In his arms, he was carrying a woman.

It was Skyla.
