steady breath.
She had already decided to divorce Chris. There was no point sinking back into this kind of self–inflicted misery.
Once they were divorced, the intimacy between Chris and Skyla would go far beyond this. Thinking of that, she forced herself to look away. She shifted slightly, angling her body to block Mrs. Xander Sr.’s
view.
Mrs. Xander Sr. wasn’t feeling well. If she saw Chris and Skyla together, she would surely fly into a rage, which was the last thing her health needed.
“Grandma, after your checkup, I’ll take you out for something delicious. We’ll make sure you get your appetite back.”
Mrs. Xander Sr., completely unaware, smiled and squeezed her hand. “Good! With you home keeping me company, I already feel better. I feel like I could jump up and down right now.”
The image of an eighty–year–old woman “jumping up and down” made Winter laugh despite herself. She steadied her and teased gently, “Let’s hold off on the jumping. I don’t want your blood pressure monitor setting off alarms and scaring the doctors.”
Even though it was the weekend, the hospital leadership personally came out when Mrs. Xander Sr. arrived for her checkup.
Winter didn’t expect to run into a familiar face.
“Grandma.”
A tall, handsome man in a white lab coat stepped forward. A strip of sunlight from the floor–to–ceiling windows fell across his shoulder. With just a small smile, he gave off an effortless warmth.
As William once put it, he would be the textbook second male lead in a TV drama. 1
Except he was the son of the Davis family. In real life, he was very much the main character.
Mrs. Xander Sr. blinked in surprise before breaking into a delighted smile. “Zac! I was just chatting with your grandma a few days ago. She said you were coming back to the country. I didn’t expect you so soon. You’ve grown up. And taller, too.”
Zac Davis smiled warmly. “Grandma, I was already twenty–seven when I went abroad for further training. I’m not getting any taller.”
His gaze shifted to the person beside her, and his voice softened. “Winnie, on the other hand, has grown up quite a bit.”
“Zac,” Winter greeted at once, smiling. “It’s been a long time. When did you get back?”
She had feigned ignorance only because she didn’t want to make Winter feel even more humiliated.
Zac turned back to Winter. “Everything’s arranged for Grandma’s checkup. Let’s start with the fasting
tests.”
“You can go ahead if you’re busy,” Winter said. “Someone else can take us.”
“I don’t have surgery today,” Zac replied. “I’m not busy.”
He pressed the elevator button and lifted a hand to hold the door, subtly shielding Winter as they stepped inside.
After the blood draw, Mrs. Xander Sr. went into the changing room to put on loose, comfortable clothing for the rest of the tests.
