Chapter 56
Winter let out a dismissive huff and rolled the car window back up.
She drove back to the Xander Estate. Mrs. Xander Sr. was still asleep from her nap.
That night, Dominic drove to Nocturne. He glanced at the parking spots and saw that Chris’s car was already there.
He got out of the car and picked up the sealed bag Winter had given him from the passenger seat. He then left his coat hanging open, and strode into the lobby.
When he entered the private room, most of the people there were old friends. There were not many of them, maybe seven or eight in total.
Dominic immediately spotted Chris sitting on the sofa with a glass of liquor in his hand.
Unlike his usual suit and overcoat, Chris was wearing a dark brown jacket tonight. It made him look mature and deep, with a deceptive hint of softness.
But Dominic knew better. It was all a facade. Behind that look was a man who could be ruthless without blinking.
Still, he had to admit, whether Chris wore a suit or casual clothes, he always looked sharp and put- together. No wonder he had Winter so completely wrapped around his finger.
Their circle was not short on good–looking men and women. But someone as striking as Chris was rare. Add in his build, his wealth, and his nerve, and he was even harder to match.
Dominic greeted the others in the room, then walked over to Skyla, reminding her to grab some food if she wasn’t drinking.
Back then, Skyla had saved Chris’s life. To the rest of them, that made her a savior too. Naturally, they treated her well.
Dominic walked over to Chris and handed him the sealed envelope. “Here. Winter asked me to give this to you.”
Zac, who was sitting close to Chris, looked over. On the other side of the table, Skyla’s gaze remained calm and unreadable.
Chris, however, cast a cold glance at the sealed envelope.
Seeing that he had no intention of taking it, Dominic dropped onto the sofa beside him. “Didn’t you ask for it? I brought it, and now you won’t even take it. What’s with the attitude?”
Dominic pretended he was about to untie the string around the envelope.
Before he could, Chris snatched it away.
Dominic chuckled. He had only been putting on a show.

See? He clearly wanted it, but he had to act like he didn’t. Would it kill him to just admit it for once?
A while later, Gavin walked into the room. “Mr. Xander.”
Chris’s phone rang.
An unknown number.
A cut had opened at his temple from the impact.
He lifted his cold gaze toward the SUV across from them. In the driver’s seat, a man wearing a black mask held up a phone.
Chris slid his finger across the screen and answered.
A voice came through, casual yet full of menace. “Chris Xander, this is what you get for helping outsiders instead of her.”

Through the windshield, Chris held his phone and stared at the man inside the SUV, his eyes dark and dangerous.
William Zeller.
