Chapter 57

Late at night, Winter helped Mrs. Xander Sr. with a foot soak and stayed to chat with her for a while. When Mrs. Xander Sr. finally leaned against the headboard, drifting off to sleep, Winter stood up to leave.
“Winter…”
Mrs. Xander Sr. suddenly grabbed her hand.
Winter paused and sat back down on the edge of the bed. “Grandma?”
Mrs. Xander Sr.’s eyes were half open. She looked exhausted, her voice hoarse. “Winter, I know you’ve been wronged. I know everything. Can you please not stay angry with Chris? I know the Xander family owes Skyla a debt. We shouldn’t have dragged you into it. But I hope you and Chris won’t let outside influences come between you. I want you two to stay together.”
Afraid Winter would refuse, Mrs. Xander Sr. forced her eyes open wider and gently patted her hand.
“Alright?”
At the hospital earlier, Chris and Winter hadn’t exchanged a single word.
Even in the past three years, things had never been this cold.
Winter wasn’t the type to suffer in silence. There was no way she could just swallow the sight of Chris and Skyla together.
She lowered her head and said nothing.
To Mrs. Xander Sr., that silence looked like someone who had already made up her mind.
But the next second, Winter met Mrs. Xander Sr.’s tired gaze and smiled softly. “I’ll handle it, Grandma. Don’t worry. Go to sleep. I’m heading back. I have work tomorrow.”
Mrs. Xander Sr. relaxed a little. “It’s late. I’ll have Mr. White arrange a car to take you back to Blackwood Manor.”
“I can drive myself-”
“You’re tired too. I won’t feel at ease with you driving alone,” Mrs. Xander Sr. interrupted, already calling for Mr. White.
Winter didn’t have the heart to tell her she had moved out of Blackwood Manor long ago. If she did, Mrs. Xander Sr. would surely piece everything together.
Although the initial check–up results looked fine, several key reports wouldn’t be ready for a few days. Mrs. Xander Sr. was clearly ill. She didn’t need more stress.
After Winter got into the car, she glanced back and saw Mr. White still standing there.
Only then did she realize it might have been a test.

A test to see whether she was still living at Blackwood Manor.
That tone. It was definitely him.
Winter let out a breath of relief. She shut the door behind her, took a pair of slippers from the shoe cabinet, and slipped them on. As she hung up her bag, she asked, “When did you get back? Why didn’t you call me?”
William ignored her. He sat on the couch with his legs spread, staring at her without saying another word.
His gaze made her uneasy.
Her eyes shifted to the bruise at his temple. She pointed at it. “Did you get hurt while filming?”
