“I got into a fight.” William pulled off his gloves and tossed them onto the arm of the couch.
Winter frowned. “Seriously?”
He shot her a lazy look. “Look at you. Who would dare fight me?”
Winter clasped her hands together in mock respect. “Sure, sure. You’re the toughest guy in the room. Anyone who messes with you must have a death wish.”
She took off her scarf and sat down beside him, studying him up close.
In this movie, William was playing a tough guy. Before filming started, he had shaved his hair into a buzz
cut.
The day he showed up at the airport in a black leather jacket and sunglasses, fans had screamed so loudly it nearly shook the terminal, shouting his name like the place was on fire.
He was undeniably handsome, but now that she was looking at him this close, she could see more than just the bruise at his temple. The corner of his mouth was split too. He looked pretty beat up.
“Filming must’ve been rough,” she said lightly. “Look what it did to that pretty face of yours.”
William shot her a glare. “You ungrateful little-”
He stopped himself mid–sentence. His expression hardened, and his eyes swept over her from head to toe, slow and deliberate, like he was checking for damage.
“Where are you hurt?” he asked, his voice low.
“What do you mean, where am I hurt?”
“Winter Scott, are you really going to play dumb with me?”
She froze slightly.
William rarely called her by her full name. Most of the time he called her Winnie. If he was mildly annoyed, he called her “Ms. Scott.” Only when he was truly angry did he use her full name.
A chill crept into her chest. She tested the waters. “What exactly do you know?”
“Jacob Jasper is dead.”
William’s expression darkened.
He had been filming in the mountains with poor signal. To stay immersed in the role, he often left his phone behind and didn’t go online.
He only found out during the day when someone on set mentioned Jacob’s death.
The Jasper family had some ties to the Zeller family. Out of habit, he had someone look into it. What he
Did she not see him as her childhood best friend anymore?
Winter knew he was truly angry now. She had no choice but to tell the truth. “Actually, my ear hasn’t fully recovered. My eardrum was ruptured. I still get ringing sometimes.”
William whipped his head around. “Which ear?”
She turned her right ear toward him and said seriously, “The doctor told me I need to stay in a good mood. I can’t bottle things up. And I definitely can’t sit around watching someone else sulk.”
William frowned. “You’re making that up.”
“Believe it or not.”
He clicked his tongue and raised his hand as if to smack her lightly on the forehead. But remembering her ear injury, he ended up tapping his own forehead instead.
The phone on the coffee table suddenly rang.
William picked it up and answered.
On the other end, a bodyguard’s respectful voice came through. “Sir, Chris Xander is downstairs.”
