Chapter 59
William let out a cold laugh and cursed under his breath. “He’s got some nerve showing up.”
He hung up and pulled Winter off the couch. “Let’s go.”
He grabbed her scarf and wrapped it clumsily around her neck.
“Where are we going?” Winter tugged at the scarf, nearly strangled by how tight he had pulled it.
She hadn’t heard what the bodyguard said on the phone, so she followed William out in confusion.
At the entryway, William bent down to pull on his hiking boots, his face still carrying that battle–worn look from filming. “Come downstairs and see for yourself. Why so many questions? You think I’m going to sell you off?”
Winter stopped asking and followed him into the elevator.
Just as they stepped out, she suddenly halted. “Where’s your mask?”
When she had come home earlier, she had seen the black mask pulled down to his chin. Now it was
gone.
William had a huge fan base, and just as many haters. If someone caught him ditching the production and posted it online, the backlash would be immediate. Once public opinion started to spiral, online
attacks would be unavoidable.
“It’s in my pocket. Take it out for me. My hand hurts,” William said as he kept walking.
Winter quickened her steps to catch up. She reached into the right pocket of his coat and pulled out a black mask. Grabbing his arm, she said firmly, “Stand still.”
He acted like he wasn’t a celebrity at all.
William made no move to put it on himself. Winter muttered a quiet curse under her breath before unfolding the mask and standing on her tiptoes to hook it over his ears.
She adjusted the edges carefully, like a fussy parent. Out of habit, she reached up to smooth the hair at his forehead, only for her fingers to brush against the short, bristly buzz cut. She remembered then that he had shaved it off.
To avoid awkwardness, she patted his head instead. “Looks like you’ve grown taller again.”
“I didn’t grow. You shrank,” William said, brushing her hand away.
Winter stopped in her tracks, her expression darkening.
William suddenly raised his palm and blocked her view. “Don’t look. It’ll burn your eyes.”
She pulled his hand down. “It’s not like I haven’t seen worse.”
The image of Chris carrying Skyla into the elevator that morning hurt far more than this.
At those words, William’s temper exploded. He pointed at Chris and shouted, “Chris Xander, you bastard! How dare you treat her like this!”
Skyla frowned. “William Zeller, you were the one who rammed your car into Chris’s. You started it, and now you’re accusing him?”
“Did I ask for your input?” William’s sharp gaze cut toward her, open disgust flashing in his eyes.
Winter grabbed his sleeve. “You rammed his car?”
