Chapter 46
(Daisy’s POV)
For a moment, I forgot how to move.
Not in a dramatic, poetic way. Or like the world stopped spinning. Just… physically.
Because when I looked up, it was Mabel. Standing right in front of me.
Coffee dripping down the front of her dress like it was natural for it to come from the dress. It was that bad.
Her eyes dropped slowly, taking in the damage, then she lifted her head.
“…Are you serious right now?”
Her voice was instantly loud and that made it worse.
“I- I am so sorry,” I said quickly, my words tripping over themselves. “I didn’t see you, I was just—”
“Are you blind?” She cut in, tilting her head slightly, “Or is this intentional?”
“No. I said I’m sorry-”
“Swallow your useless apologies. You spilled coffee on me!”
She said it like I might not have noticed. Like I needed clarification.
Her fingers brushed lightly over the fabric now, lifting it just enough to inspect the stain. The material caught the light, smooth and expensive in a way I didn’t even have the vocabulary to describe.
“This is silk,” she said, almost to herself, but loud enough for me to hear. “Custom!”
I felt worse.
“I didn’t know you were there,” I said again, softer this time. Then I crouched slightly, instinct taking over as I reached forward.
“I can fix it-”
Her hand shot out.
“Don’t touch me!”
The words were sharp. Immediate. She pushed my hand away with enough force to make me step back.
“You’ll fucking smear it!”
“I was just trying to help-”
“You’re not doing that!”
I straightened slowly, my hands hovering awkwardly in front of me like I wasn’t sure where to put them anymore.
“I didn’t mean to,” I said.
She didn’t respond immediately.
Instead, she looked at me. Properly this time. Her gaze moved across my face, slow and deliberate, like she was sorting through a memory.
Then she paused.
“…wait.”
Something shifted.
“Oh.”
