Chapter 47
Manager.
Of course.
Of course he was the manager, and Mabel seemingly had a good relationship with him which makes what he had just witness implicative on my job application.
Mabel turned back and walked past me. Her shoulder brushed mine again, not accidental, and not gentle.
Just enough to move me aside and pass a message. Then she was gone.
Chloe followed, and just like that, the air changed. The tension left with her and silence filled the space instead.
I stood there for a moment, and then it hit me.
That man, the manager, based on what I saw, might be a family member of hers. Maybe her uncle.
And if that was true, it meant…
Yeah.
No job for me.
“Hey.”
I turned.
The girl from earlier stood there, holding a cloth, already halfway through cleaning the mess.
“It’s okay,” she said.
“I didn’t mean to,” I said quickly. “It was an accident, I wasn’t looking and then my phone-”
“I know,” she replied, nodding slightly. That somehow made me feel worse.
“The manager will see you now.”
Oh. Okay.
Hearing that, I didn’t know what I felt but I nodded and walked over to his office since he had retreated now. Each step felt heavier than the last, but at least this part was predictable.
Rejection
I could handle that.
By the time I got to him, I had already accepted it. So I started talking before he could, sparing him the stress.
“You don’t need to explain anything, Sir,” I said quickly. “I understand the decision. That was my fault and I should have been more
careful. I know this reflects badly, especially in a place like this, so I understand why you wouldn’t want to take that risk–”
“You’re employed.”
I stopped.
“…what?”
“You’re employed,” he repeated, giving me a weirded-out look.
I blinked.
Then blinked again.
“I’m sorry, I think I misheard you.”
“We need workers. And if you’re here for that with knowledge of the basic know-hows, you got the job.”
I stared at him.
