He Didn’t Kidnap Me. Not Exactly novel Chapter 72

Chapter 72

{Daisy’s POV)

“We’re being watched.”

That was the sentence in my head as I kept walking.

And I was moving fast, not because I was calm or because I had suddenly unlocked some inner survival instinct.

I was moving promptly because when someone like DeLuca says something like that, you don’t argue.

You move.

My brain, however, did not move. It stayed right there on “watched.”

Watched meant “seen”. Seen meant targeted. Targeted meant-

Nope.

We’re not finishing that thought.

We walked down the street like two completely normal people who were not, in any way, being observed by someone who might be holding a weapon.

I say so, because in these types of settings, the observer is usually holding a weapon.

My heart was thumping and my neck remained stiff, like if I turned even slightly, something bad would happen.

Which made me want to turn even more. But I didn’t.

Maturity.

We were approaching the car when relief hit me so fast it almost made me dizzy.

Okay. Good. Car. Safe.

I shifted my direction a bit more to the car now, “We get in the car and-”

“Walk past it,” DeLuca said.

I blinked. "what?”

“Walk past it. Take a left.”

I slowed there for half a second before catching myself and continuing. “Why would we not get into the car? That’s literally what

cars are for. Escape. Survival!” I whisper-yelled, my heart hammering now.

“If we get into the car,” he said calmly, “we lead them to where we stay or other familiar places. This escalates.”

Oh.

Right.

I nodded quickly. “Okay. Yes. That’ll be terrible. I hate that plan. We’re not doing that.”

And so we passed the car. Just like that.

We turned left into a quieter street and my heartbeat picked up, rougher now

“So…” I started, keeping my voice low, “what exactly are we dealing with here?” I decided to be meticulous.

“Keep walking.”

“I am walking. I can walk and talk. Multitasking is one of my few talents.”

Silence.

Which meant I was going to keep talking.

“Is this like… robbery dangerous? Or like… crime documentary dangerous? Or-” I swallowed, “-movie dangerous?”

He didn’t answer. Meanwhile, I felt like I asked a really good question.

“Are we talking knife? Gun?” I continued. “Please don’t say gun.”

“Sniper.”

I almost stopped walking.

I didn’t. But it was very close.
