Corbin broke out in a cold sweat, standing frozen with his wine glass hovering in the air.
Mrs. Xavier looked equally mortified. She couldn't believe her son would be stupid enough to stash a woman in the room during a critical apology dinner. Unbelievable!
She was absolutely seething, but with Nelson sitting right there, she swallowed her rage and offered a tight, awkward laugh.
Terrified that Nelson was about to leave, Juniper realized her rocking wasn't loud enough.
She ruthlessly smashed her forehead against the wooden bedframe. Searing pain exploded through her skull, but she refused to stop.
She didn't dare imagine what awaited her if Nelson walked out that door.
Nelson was despicable—truly despicable—yet in this living nightmare, he was her only shred of hope.
She slammed her head repeatedly. The banging was far louder this time, echoing rhythmically through the suite. It was painfully obvious someone was in distress.
Nelson had a distinct feeling that whoever was behind the screen was making those sounds intentionally, desperately trying to get his attention.
He stood up and walked deliberately toward the wooden screen.
Corbin's knees went weak. The caller had promised Nelson didn't care about Juniper, but she was still his ex-girlfriend.
What if he did?!!
Corbin practically collapsed onto the floor in sheer terror.
Nelson had just reached the edge of the screen—Juniper could even see the silhouette of his shoulder—when the heavy suite doors were violently thrown open.
Lydia appeared at the door, looking completely devastated. "Nelson, Josie's been kidnapped! The kidnappers just called me!"
Nelson froze instantly. He whipped around and took massive, urgent strides toward the exit.
Lydia threw herself into his arms, sobbing hysterically. "What do I do? What am I supposed to do? Josie is my entire life."
