Hayden savagely crushed the cigarette into the ashtray.
Meanwhile, Zoe and Garrett had made it back to the Sterling offices.
The second she stepped into her suite, her phone lit up with Hayden's caller ID.
She assumed he was calling to interrogate her about the 'dead husband' comment at lunch.
She had absolutely zero desire to deal with that man.
She wasn't going to let him ruin her good mood.
Zoe silenced the device, tossed it on her desk, and threw herself back into her work.
It was only two hours later, when she finally leaned back in her chair to take a break, that she reached for her phone.
She was shocked to see the battery had drained from eighty percent down to twenty.
Opening her notifications, she saw an endless stream of missed callsโalmost entirely from Hayden.
There was also a text message.
'You moved out? Where the hell did you take my daughter?'
Zoe stared at the screen, utterly bewildered.
His daughter?
He must have texted the wrong person. The man only claimed to have a son.
Wasn't the kid's name Holden?
Zoe rolled her eyes hard. She swiped past every other notification badge tied to Hayden's name, refusing to give him any more of her time.
She did notice, however, two missed calls from Timothy.
Zoe gasped softly. In her rush to block out Hayden, she had completely missed a call from the Director of the aerospace base.
If it was an emergency, she was in real trouble.
She dialed him back immediately. It rang three times before Timothy answered.
'Ms. Lynd.'
His voice was warm and courteous. 'Did you need something urgent, Director Yates?' Zoe asked anxiously.
She assumed something had gone wrong with the project, otherwise, he wouldn't have called so soon after she left.
Back at Easton, Hayden's inability to get ahold of Zoe had pushed his rage past the boiling point.
Ethan, having been abandoned on the highway, eventually had to call his assistant to dispatch a private helicopter from the Montgomery estate just to get back to the city.
His first stop upon returning was Easton's headquarters. But when he walked into the CEO's suite, he found Hayden radiating an intensely suffocating aura of wrath.
Knowing Hayden as well as he did, Ethan knew that provoking him now was tantamount to suicide.
He wisely retreated, only to bump straight into Sienna Winters in the hallway.
Having completely botched the tech deal with Zachary Harrison, Sienna had been in a foul mood herself.
She had come seeking comfort from Hayden, only to peek through the blinds and see him chain-smokingโa rare vice for him.
Assuming he was furious over her failure with Zachary, she panicked and tactfully stayed out of his way.
After all, dropping that ball had been entirely her fault.
'Mr. Montgomery, Hayden is in a terrible mood right now. I don't think we should disturb him,' she murmured, masking her own guilt.
Ethan, believing Hayden was simply unhinged over Zoe's public defiance, nodded and let Sienna lead him away from the war zone.
She brought him to the VIP lounge, where Ethan immediately showered her with praise.
