I Loved You in the Dark Until Someone Loved Me in the Light novel Chapter 12

Gillian’s expression remained indifferent. "You just started at this hospital, so there are a few things we need to get straight. Medical records are not a resume builder; they represent human lives. Unless the attending physician commits a major error, cases don't just get handed over."

"If you want good cases, you need to work hard and earn them yourself."

Her words were ice-cold, offering Hailey absolutely no quarter.

Hailey froze for a second, clearly realizing she didn't have York around to back her up right now.

Gillian fully expected the girl to cry, but surprisingly, Hailey just pouted and forced a smile. "Oh, I see. I thought I got a share of it too. I'll remember that for the future. Thanks for teaching me, Gillian."

During the lunch break.

York arrived just as Hailey happened to be in the restroom, leaving the office empty.

Gillian was walking down the corridor toward the nurse's station with a stack of medical records when she spotted York. He was carrying takeout from a highly exclusive restaurant.

It was obvious how much he genuinely cared for the girl, rushing to the hospital whenever he had a spare moment just to bring her lunch.

Back then, when Gillian had fainted from hypoglycemia, York had coldly claimed he was busy in a meeting and didn't even drop by to check on her.

Let alone picking her up, dropping her off, and delivering lunch every day—that was purely wishful thinking on her part.

Gillian tightened her grip on the files, lowered her gaze, and tried to pretend she hadn't seen him. She kept her eyes glued to the records, intending to walk right past.

In the next second, the man grabbed her wrist.

"Where's Hailey?" he demanded.

She felt a flash of irritation and shot him a glare. "She's your girlfriend. Shouldn't you be the one keeping track of her, Mr. Foster?"

York frowned. "She's pregnant and shouldn't overwork herself. What kind of tasks did you assign her? It's lunchtime and she still hasn't taken a break. If anything happens to her or the baby..."

He constantly harped on about how fragile and precious her pregnancy was. She hadn't even signed the divorce papers yet! Did he really not understand that flaunting a mistress was completely shameless?

"As if no one else has ever been pregnant!" Gillian laughed out of sheer anger, her patience completely snapping after enduring this for days. She cut him off sharply, "Mr. Foster, being pregnant doesn't make someone a fragile porcelain doll. If she’s coming to the hospital, she has to do her job. She can't collect a paycheck and do nothing. She wants the credit without putting in the work? Life doesn't work that way."
