His grip on her wrist was bruising.

He had dragged her into the stairwell without a word, and Gillian tried fiercely to wrench her arm free.

But her strength was no match for his, and she couldn't break his hold.

"Let go of me," Gillian demanded, forcing her voice to remain steady and calm.

York released her wrist.

"Put your name on today's incident report," he ordered, looking down at her. He spoke so casually, as if he were discussing what to have for dinner. "Hailey just started working here. She’s brand new. Take the fall for this so her record stays spotless."

Gillian stared at him in utter disbelief, convinced she had misheard him.

His words sliced through her, cutting her to the core. First, he was indifferent, and now he was demanding she take the blame for his mistress. She wasn't made of stone; she had a heart, and it hurt.

Her lips turned pale as she fought to suppress the crushing weight of her emotions. "Then give my colleague her fellowship spot back."

There were only a handful of spots available. If her colleague was reinstated, Hailey would have to drop out.

"Impossible," he refused instantly, without a second of hesitation.

Of course. How could York bear to see his precious favorite suffer even a minor setback?

"So your little sweetheart creates a disaster, and I'm supposed to carry the blame? Why?"

"Gillian, you were the one who failed to supervise her." His patience seemed to evaporate. His eyes darkened into a storm of oppressive, suffocating fury as he stepped into her space and forcefully tilted her chin up. "Think about your mother's medical bills. Think about your father in prison."

Medical bills?

Gillian found it almost laughable. He had already frozen her secondary credit card days ago, yet he had the nerve to bring it up now to threaten her.

"Do whatever you want." She slapped his hand away. "As a doctor, I have professional ethics and boundaries. Hailey needs a clean record, and so do I. If she actually had any real talent, she wouldn't have made such a stupid, amateur mistake."
