For a split second, Gillian's heart nearly hammered out of her chest.
Her fingers subconsciously twisted into the bedsheets. Did he hear what Chloe just said?
"What's going on?" York stared at Gillian's face.
Gillian asked Chloe to step out, saying she needed a moment alone with him.
The fact that York asked what was going on meant he hadn't heard Chloe's declaration. If he had, he wouldn't be standing there with that attitude.
Gillian met his gaze calmly. "Are you here to demand an apology for Hailey?"
"I'm asking you, what is wrong?" York's eyes zeroed in on her hand pressing against her stomach.
"It's my period. I have cramps." Gillian looked at him. "Don't you know? These are the few days every month you can't touch me."
Since they got married, York had demanded her in bed almost every single day. Her period was the only time he backed off.
It was true that she was due for her cycle right around now.
The man frowned slightly at her pale complexion. "You're already in this state, and you still insist on working. Will you die if you take a day off?"
"I've worked like this for years, and I'm not dead yet, am I?" Gillian shot back.
York was briefly silenced.
Then he spoke again. "What were you trying to say to Hailey earlier?"
"She's young and naive. She doesn't know about our relationship. There's no need for you to target her at every turn, let alone insult her in public."
It was always the same lines.
Gillian endured the pain and stared at him. "Is that your excuse for cheating on your wife? Just because she doesn't know, that gives her the right to be a homewrecker?"
"Now she's using my father's reputation as a stepping stone. Don't you owe me an explanation?" she demanded.
"Didn't your buddy Miles tell you?" York's expression turned grim. "And what right do you have to question me about any of this?"
Gillian's chest tightened with a suffocating ache.
He was right. They were about to go their separate ways. What was there left to talk about?
"Get out. I don't feel well. I need to rest."
With a dark expression, York poured her a glass of water and set it on the nightstand. "Drink this. Take the afternoon off and pull yourself together. Grandmother called and said she wants to see you. I'll pick you up tonight to go to the estate."
She had wondered why he was suddenly acting considerate. He needed a favor.
Since they were getting a divorce, she had no obligation to help him play house for his family.
"I'm not going."
