I Loved You in the Dark Until Someone Loved Me in the Light novel Chapter 25

The moment they walked through the door, York's mother, Evelyn Foster, was already sitting on the sofa.

Seeing Gillian, she smiled warmly and walked over to greet her. "You haven't been back in so long. Being a doctor really keeps you busy."

"Grandmother is in the kitchen making your favorite hearty beef stew."

Gillian smiled. "Thank you, Mom. And thank Grandmother for me."

"How did you lose so much weight?" Evelyn stared at her. She was noticeably thinner, her bones prominent beneath her clothes. Evelyn looked Gillian up and down. "Is York mistreating you? I'll teach him a lesson for you."

Gillian lowered her eyes, a sharp pang of pain striking her heart at those words.

Everyone could see she had withered away, yet all York saw was Hailey.

She pressed her lips together and offered a faint smile. "No, he isn't."

Evelyn glared at York. "Gillian has lost so much weight. Are you even paying attention to your wife? She never used to look like this. Is she sick? Take her to the hospital for a full checkup on your next day off."

"Sure," he agreed readily.

Gillian knew he was just brushing his family off. He didn't care in the slightest.

Just then, Grandmother walked out of the kitchen. "Is Gillian here?"

Beatrice smiled affectionately. "Will I have any hope of holding a great-grandchild this year?"

"Grandmother," York interjected, "we're focusing on our careers right now."

Gillian bit her lip lightly, subconsciously brushing a hand over her lower abdomen. He had never wanted a child, completely unwilling to even entertain the idea for his family's sake.

During dinner, Beatrice doted on Gillian, serving her a massive bowl of the rich beef stew.

York carried it over to her, but the moment he set it down, the heavy scent of the meat triggered a wave of intense nausea. It was her first bout of morning sickness. Her expression shifted slightly as she tried to force it down.

The next second, the man placed a piece of roast chicken on her plate. "Grandmother and Mom both said you've lost weight. Eat more."

The chicken skin glistened with oil.
